Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High School (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of over one and up to two years in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations, Law & Security or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have over one (1) year experience in animal control or handling and/or caring for animals in an animal care facility

Physical Requirements:

• The candidates should be willing and able to work different shifts and rotating with some days off

Other Requirements:

• The candidates should possess a valid non-probationary Ontario Class G driver’s license
• The candidates should have Municipal Law Enforcement Officers Association training
• The candidates should be able to recognize and deal effectively with a diversity of animals, problems, and behaviors
• The candidates should have exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service
• The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal with the public in a courteous, tactful, and effective manner
• The candidates should be able to work independently and as part of a team
• The candidates should demonstrate mature judgment and the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and fellow employees
• The candidates should have Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of Chameleon

Responsibilities:

• The candidates should be able to ensure the safety of the public and animals by educating and enforcing City by-laws and Provincial legislation regarding the control of domestic and wild animals (dogs, cats, horses, deer, raccoons, skunks, birds, rodents, and snakes)
• The candidates should be able to educate and collaborate with the public regarding compliance with animal-related legislation and responsible pet ownership, providing excellent customer service
• The candidates should be able to respond to complaints of animals in distress, sick, or injured, providing expert handling to rescue, transport, and release animals safely
• The candidates should be able to assess the health status of animals for injury or illness in order to determine the correct course of action to take such as impound, isolate, transport to veterinarian, or euthanize
• The candidates should be able to respond to locations to apprehend dogs restricting access for emergency services and act as a subject matter expert when executing search and rescue seizure of dogs
• The candidates should be able to educate and work with residents to attempt compliance with regards to animal-related legislations, and if education and collaboration are not successful, enforce municipal by-laws and other legislation pertaining to animals
• The candidates should be able to issue Provincial Offence Notices, licenses, and orders as required, take witness statements, gather evidence, and prepare court documents, ensuring all evidence and information are kept in a manner that follows best practices and Continuity
• The candidates should be able to appear and testify in court proceedings and appeal tribunals, attend and investigate all dog bites while liaising with the supervisor
• The candidates should be able to patrol the City while operating a City vehicle or on foot, pick up deceased animals from public or private property, and arrange for the removal of large animals
• The candidates should be able to euthanize wildlife following best practices, assess and determine when the euthanasia of wildlife is necessary, and occasionally assist in the tranquilization and euthanasia of shelter animals
• The candidates should be able to apprehend stray domestic animals and injured/ill wildlife and transport them to the shelter, complete detailed reports on all incidents in the computer system and black books, and complete daily vehicle circle checks and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports
• The candidates should be able to provide assistance and information to the public or refer to appropriate agencies, participate in special events and community projects to present information and help the community
• The candidates should be able to collect and record fees and fine payments for tags, veterinarian charges, impound, issue receipts, maintain Animal Control equipment and vehicle by regular maintenance, cleaning, and disinfection, and pick up and deliver mail, licenses, and supplies as required
• The candidates should be able to routinely prepare for and/or transport animals to and from spay/neuter appointments, transport shelter animals to and from veterinary clinics or groomers for miscellaneous appointments, surgeries, and emergency health care
• The candidates should be able to assist with shelter programming such as adoptions and fostering programs by providing transport of animals, equipment, food, medication, and pertinent records to and from various locations
• The candidates should be able to recommend new or changes to Animal Control policies and procedures for review and approval by senior staff, liaise with Public Health, Peel Regional Police, or other outside agencies as required, and perform after-hours emergency services for high priority activities as defined by the department
• The candidates should be able to actively engage the public, volunteers, and other agencies to support lifesaving, successful compliance, and community programs, and perform additional similar and related duties as assigned
