Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Diploma or certificate from an approved Resource Technology Program
Experience: Candidates should have related experience in wildfire management

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba as required, and capable of flying frequently in a wide variety of small aircraft in adverse weather conditions
  • The candidates should be physically able to perform the duties assigned to the position, including lifting equipment weighing up to 65 lbs, with extensive experience in wildfire suppression, coordination, preparedness, and detection efforts
  • The candidates should have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should have the ability to prioritize and organize changing workloads and demands, along with budget management experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid full-stage Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should have project or program management skills with the abilities to motivate and lead teams and resolve conflict
  • The candidates should have experience in supervision and performance management of staff
  • The candidates should possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills to make effective decisions and have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment
  • The candidates should have effective verbal and written communication skills
  • The candidates should have experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and Outlook) or similar software applications

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for the prevention, detection, and suppression of wildfires and manage all human and equipment resources needed for fighting wildfires in the province
  • The candidates should be able to monitor weather patterns, lightning strikes, soil moisture, and forest conditions to determine the probability and location of wildfires
  • The candidates should be able to work in close cooperation with other forest firefighting agencies and jurisdictions
  • The candidates should be able to share equipment and other resources through the Canadian Inter-Agency Forest Fire Centre and the Great Lakes Forest Fire Compact
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for all aspects of the planning and implementation of the Wildfire Branch fire management programming within their assigned wildfire areas
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for the delivery of all operational aspects of wildfire management within a fire zone, leading staff during critical events and in daily wildfire preparedness and suppression operations
  • The candidates should be able to possess a broad knowledge base of all aspects of wildfire management programming for the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of all wildfire operational needs
  • The candidates should be able to manage complex wildfire bases, requiring project management skills to efficiently supervise and implement base renewal and new capital projects
  • The candidates should be able to be entitled to overtime at the rate of 1.5x for hours worked after a regular 8-hour shift and 2x for working any hours during a scheduled day of rest or day off
