Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five years of journeyman experience in the construction of commercial and residential buildings
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to analyze, interpret, and apply the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, City Bylaws, and related policies to residential buildings
- The candidates should be able to identify non-compliant construction with Alberta Building Code standards and assess structural stability from plans or on-site inspections
- The candidates should be able to understand and explain plans and designs to stakeholders and communicate effectively through verbal and written means
- The candidates should be customer-oriented and able to convey technical concepts in a simple, professional manner to address diverse customer
- The candidates should have the ability to handle multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and work both independently and as part of a team
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have one of the following combinations of education and experience, Journeyman Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician, Sheet Metal Worker Bricklayer Certification recognized in Alberta with, A two-year technology diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and seven (7) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry after obtaining that diploma
- The candidates should have one of the following combinations of education An Engineering or Architecture degree recognized in Canada and five (5) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, with at least one (1) of those years completed after obtaining the degree
- The candidates should be a Registered Building Safety Codes Officer in the Province of Alberta with “Residential,” “Part 9,” and “Part 3” or equivalent (Group A Level 3) certification through the Safety Codes Council (preferred) Applicants from other jurisdictions or those who do not fully meet these requirements are still encouraged to apply
- The candidates should have demonstrated experience in building construction, including best practices, project scheduling, and knowledge of standard methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in Residential, Part 9, and Part 3 projects
- The candidates should be proficient in using computers, tablets, and smartphones for data entry, plan review, and communication with customers and pass a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, with potential costs
- The candidates should hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) and arrange their own vehicle and business auto insurance to be reimbursed for mileage according to City policy and demonstrate service excellence, embrace diversity, and promote inclusiveness
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to conduct plans examination and permit application reviews for newly constructed and renovated buildings and structures, ensuring compliance with the Building Code, bylaws, regulations, and municipal standards
- The candidates should be able to coach applicants on how to resolve issues related to permit applications, following up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies
- The candidates should be able to create and issue building permits, with the authority to withhold, suspend, revoke, and extend permits through established processes
- The candidates should be able to grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages, in alignment with submitted and approved plans
- The candidates should be able to consult with, or assist, other municipal business areas, provincial authorities, and associations regarding complex information, including Code interpretations and applications
- The candidates should be able to input relevant data, reports, correspondence, and permits into POSSE and other data management systems
- The candidates should be able to provide guidance and advice on building codes and regulations to contractors, designers, developers, and citizens, educating on safety codes and fostering relationships with external stakeholders
- The candidates should be able to inspect projects to ensure they meet safety codes standards, participate in safety training and meetings, and adhere to environmental protection practices during assigned tasks
