The department ensures a secure environment through routine patrols, crime prevention, and community engagement. Operating as part of the University Safety Department, Patrol Services supports Carleton’s commitment to a safe and welcoming campus. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High School Diploma
Experience: Candidates should have minimum 2 years of full-time experience working in law enforcement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada and provincial statutes, as well as University policies and knowledge of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its application in the field of law enforcement and amended legislation that is pertinent to the position and a thorough understanding of the authorities related to arrest, search, and seizure
  • The candidates should have an understanding and knowledge of the concepts and application of the community-based policing model and transfer information within a team environment, as well as instruct when and where required in areas of expertise and excellent knowledge of conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing—through security reports, complaint and witness statements, and in assisting and providing general information to the university community and visitors while demonstrating attention to detail and demonstrate a high degree of tact and diplomacy when dealing with the university community under a variety of difficult situations, including providing general information and giving instructions to violators of university regulations
  • The candidates should be able to deal with complex issues, quickly determine appropriate actions, and respond in a composed, self-assured manner while handling highly stressful situations and persons in crisis and self-motivated and work with limited direct supervision
  • The candidates should show initiative in performing daily duties and identifying and solving problems and demonstrate sensitivity toward the cultural diversity of the campus community
  • The candidates should understand the principles of service excellence and operate a patrol vehicle safely and within standards and completed Post-Secondary Education or OPC (Ontario Police College)
  • The candidates should possess a valid security guard license as defined in the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 and a valid first aid certificate (Standard level) with CPR level C from a WSIB recognized provider and a valid Canadian-issued Driver’s License
  • The candidates should have experience in a security role or demonstrated experience providing support for individuals in a challenging and complex work environment that requires the ability to prioritize work, maintain composure under stress, and assess life safety issues

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work as licensed security guards under the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005
  • The candidates should be able to operate under the general supervision of the Shift Manager and support the objectives of Campus Safety Services for Carleton University
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate as part of a team of public safety specialists responsible for providing personal safety to university community members in a courteous, helpful, and professional manner
  • The candidates should be able to serve as a highly visible deterrent to campus crime while protecting the property and assets of the university
