Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with post-secondary education in Civil Engineering technology, transportation or other relevant area of study
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment with little or no supervision under tight deadlines, sometimes in the outdoors in inclement weather

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of City of Vancouver Transportation policy, community planning process, and land use policy. Additionally, they should possess sound knowledge of current transportation engineering design principles and methods
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work with relevant design guidelines, including TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide
  • The candidates should possess an understanding of the components of urban street design and an awareness of concepts such as Complete Streets. They should be able to apply related principles to conceptual designs
  • The candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the confidence to interact with the public through phone, email, and in person
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to read and interpret complex engineering plans and specifications, capable of understanding and carrying out oral instructions and have the ability to read and interpret rezoning and development policies and by-laws
  • The candidates should demonstrate skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups/partners and possess excellent interpersonal skills and patience to deal tactfully with staff, partner agencies, and the public
  • The candidates should have the ability to prepare technical presentations and reports on complex technical, policy, and planning issues and have a strong working knowledge and experience using AutoCAD to perform transportation drafting and design
  • The candidates should have a proven ability to work independently to produce quality materials and recommendations within tight timeframes. This includes the ability to plan, organize, set goals and outcomes, and accomplish and measure objectives and results
  • The candidates should possess working knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Suite and GIS software (MapInfo and/or ArcGIS)
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of City systems such as VanDocs, VanMap, Sharepoint, and SAP, proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook and demonstrate research, mapping, and analysis skills
  • The candidates should have demonstrated knowledge of the City’s transportation policies and networks and have a proven ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to, under supervision of a senior engineer, lead the development of conceptual geometric designs using AutoCAD, applying transportation engineering principles to support the implementation of rapid transit projects
  • The candidates should be able to engage in internal and external communication to ensure that designs are understood by other branches and stakeholders, and completed according to plan
  • The candidates should be able to prepare research, technical studies, reports, and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes, and verifying the accuracy of the content
  • The candidates should be able to, under supervision of a senior engineer, participate in the planning, design, and implementation of projects of medium to high complexity related to Rapid Transit implementation
  • The candidates should be able to identify data needs and perform moderately complex data analysis to support project decision making. Data sources include cycling and pedestrian volumes, demographics, vehicle volumes, transit ridership forecasting, and ICBC collision records
  • The candidates should be able to create maps, graphics, and presentations for public consultation and internal communication, including working with GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS and graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint
  • The candidates should be able to organize and sometimes lead meetings with internal and external stakeholders and receive, organize, and respond to public inquiries about transportation policies and active transportation projects
  • The candidates should be able to perform general administrative duties, including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos, and other administrative and/or clerical duties as required
  • The candidates should be able to undertake other duties/responsibilities as assigned
