Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High School (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of up to one (1) year in Animal Care
or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have experience of over one (1) year, up to and including two (2) years in an animal shelter or clinic environment or similar environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to handle cash
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to perform data entry and email

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service
  • The candidates should have the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • The candidates should possess a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide guidance to Shelter Assistants, co-op students, and volunteers and able to ensure the care of all animals under the control of the Animal Shelter through administration of food, maintenance of kennel facilities, and monitoring of the welfare and behavior of these animals
  • The candidates should be able to administer medication and treatment to animals as directed by Technical staff and ensure all exercise programs are completed and be able to maintain records and able to perform grooming functions, including feeding animals, cleaning food bowls, refilling water dishes, preparing food (including special diets), and hand feeding
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the kennel facilities are sterile and disinfected, including emptying and refilling litter boxes, and cleaning grooming, kitchen, storage, and other shelter areas and able to perform daily monitoring of all assigned animals, administer minor treatment as prescribed by the Vet technician, and maintain records
  • The candidates should be able to provide exemplary customer service through assisting clients interested in adoption, lost or found animals, education around animal-related legislation, and responsible pet ownership and able to arrange for medical treatment with the veterinarian, coordinate transportation to appointments, monitor returning patients, and maintain records
  • The candidates should be able to respond to public inquiries in person or by phone regarding lost animals, adoptions, and animal licensing and able to prepare daily reports related to lost, found, and deceased animals
  • The candidates should be able to ensure that all animals are properly tagged for identification and able to perform general housekeeping duties to all areas of the shelter and laundry
  • The candidates should be able to load/unload animal cadavers into the freezer and able to access the computer for data entry and research
  • The candidates should be able to order food and supplies and able to assist the Vet Technician with the examination of animals
  • The candidates should be able to assist in logging all animals into Corporate Application and tag animals and able to receive, process, and balance payments for services and issue receipts
  • The candidates should be able to participate in special events and able to euthanize animals in the absence of a veterinary technician or assist in the euthanization of animals under the direction of a veterinary technician
