Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a post-secondary diploma in a Law Clerk or related program; paralegal graduate certificate would be considered an asset
Experience: Candidates should have three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as a law clerk in a municipal legal department or with a municipal real estate lawyer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have previous experience preparing municipal and/or commercial real estate transactions from beginning to end
  • The candidates should have proficiency in standard real estate software applications such as Teraview (E-Reg)/Conveyancer is essential
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of and the ability to conduct searches through Teranet
  • The candidates should have the ability to apply a working knowledge of real estate law and complete acquisitions and dispositions of real property, including fee simple interests and easements
  • The candidates should possess experience in preparing documents related to municipal subdivision and site plan control approval is required
  • The candidates should have basic understanding of the governance of municipal transactions is necessary
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop positive and professional relationships with a variety of people while practicing excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The candidates should possess high level of professionalism with strong time management skills, attention to detail, and innovative problem-solving skills is expected
  • The candidates should have demonstrated initiative and the ability to work effectively and independently with minimal direction is crucial
  • The candidates should have a positive outlook, a desire to learn new skills, and a willingness to adapt existing skills to the needs of the department are essential
  • The candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to deal efficiently, effectively, and courteously with members of the public and co-workers are required
  • The candidates should have proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is necessary
  • The candidates should have experience with records management would be an asset
  • The candidates should have proven ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, complex, and political environment is essential
  • The candidates must undergo a Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City.
  • The candidates are required to provide proof of their current and valid certificate(s), licenses, and/or educational qualification

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to conduct searches through Teraview (E-Reg)/Conveyancer
  • The candidate should be able to prepare municipal and commercial real estate transactions from beginning to end
  • The candidate should be able to prepare agreements, deeds, easements, HST certificates, directions, statement of adjustments and proceeds, and other related legal documents
  • The candidate should be able to ensure the appropriate process of opening and closing files, attainment of signatures, follow-up, and file storage
  • The candidate should be able to assist with drafting, reviewing, and proofreading contracts and other legal documents
  • The candidate should be able to prepare correspondence, Council reports, memos, agreements, and by-laws as directed
  • The candidate should demonstrate a high level of professionalism with good judgment and the ability to deal with highly sensitive issues with confidentiality, tact, and discretion
  • The candidate should be able to respond to other City departments and external sources relating to real property and development matters, including requests for title searches from other City departments
  • The candidate should be able to provide administrative assistance to the City Solicitor and other lawyers as required
  • The candidate should be able to do other duties as assigned
