Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed a Diploma program from a recognized post-secondary institution
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of related experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed Grade 12 supplemented by a relevant Trades Qualification and 3 years of related progressive experience
  • The candidates should have completed Grade 12 and a related Technical Certificate Program (one-year full time) from a recognized post-secondary institution, with additional related academic courses and training, including at least 1 credit course in each of supervision and technical writing, and be supplemented by 4 years of related progressive experience
  • The candidates should note that an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience, a valid B.C. driver’s license with a safe driving history
  • The candidates should be able to obtain an Arborist certification (International Society of Arboriculture) before the completion of the probation period
  • The candidates should be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License before the completion of the probation period

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to implement all aspects of shade tree management, including planting, pruning, pest control, base maintenance, root care, and tree risk assessments
  • The candidates should be able to perform supervisory and technical duties by planning, coordinating, and overseeing the work of City crews and contractors
  • The candidates should be able to prepare schedules, conduct inspections, and generate reports to support the delivery of tree-related projects and programs
  • The candidates should be able to perform hands-on fieldwork in all weather conditions to ensure effective tree maintenance and care
  • The candidates should be able to develop annual and seasonal work plans aligned with section goals and objectives, while adhering to approved budgets
  • The candidates should be able to research, develop, and implement innovative work methods and techniques to enhance operational efficiency
  • The candidates should be able to review development plans and provide informed recommendations on tree-related impacts and requirements
  • The candidates should be able to develop asset-based management prescriptions, including preventative maintenance strategies for urban forestry
  • The candidates should be able to implement and adhere to safety-related policies, procedures, and regulations while performing fieldwork according to industry standards
  • The candidates should be able to respond promptly and professionally to service requests and inquiries from the public regarding urban forestry issues
