Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as completion of Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Experience: Candidates should have some experience supporting people with disabilities

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess an approved diploma or currently be enrolled in a Recreation Therapy, Support Services, or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is desired
  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Standard or Emergency First Aid with CPR-C certification and should have a working knowledge of the behaviors, support needs, and interests typical of participants
  • The candidates should demonstrate a working knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations, and rules applicable to the work performed
  • The candidates should possess a working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and equipment used in playground recreational programs and activities
  • The candidates should have the ability to work with high-needs individuals in a compassionate manner and should exhibit a high level of interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • The candidates should have some knowledge of the fundamentals of recreation program leadership and should possess some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including reporting
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to effectively monitor activities and the behavior of participants and have the ability to problem solve and work effectively with a variety of stakeholders
  • The candidates should be capable of leading groups and providing basic skills instruction in various activities and should be able to administer basic first aid
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other facility and department staff, as well as with program participants and families
  • The candidates should demonstrate a demonstrable commitment to community inclusion and equity. A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist with participant intakes to determine program suitability
  • The candidates should be able to maintain regular and respectful contact with the caregivers of participants. The position works with site staff including the day camp project manager, day camp leaders, program supervisors, and other key staff to ensure successful participation of the camper
  • The candidates should be able to adapt and modify activities, implement positive behavior supports, and provide alternate activities for small groups as necessary. The candidates should advocate for participants with disabilities and/or challenging behavior to be members of the community center and the specific program
  • The candidates should be able to communicate with participants, caregivers, and support networks to build understanding and rapport
  • The candidates should be able to support positive engagement using preventative and program planning measures
