Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should be registered Veterinary Technician with a diploma in Veterinary Technology or Animal Health Technology
Experience: Candidates should have minimum 3 years’ experience working in a veterinary clinic or other animal health facility as a Registered Veterinary Technician

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license
  • The candidates should demonstrate strong knowledge of animal behavior
  • The candidates should have knowledge of provincial and municipal legislation and by-laws
  • The candidates should have excellent communication and presentation skills
  • The candidates should possess excellent customer service skills and demonstrate leadership skills in a supervisory capacity
  • The candidates should have a good, solid knowledge of MS Office, as well as a good performance and work record
  • The candidates should have preference may be given to those with animal shelter experience

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Supervisor, Animal Services, assess all animals entering the shelter, and ensure that all animals receive excellent care while staying at the Shelter and able to provide record-keeping and ensure documentation is compliant with applicable legislative requirements
  • The candidates should be able to perform physical exams on all animals arriving at the shelter and provide any required health care and vaccinations and able to make recommendations regarding euthanasia of animals owned by members of the public and recommend alternate courses of action for ill animals
  • The candidates should be able to perform and provide euthanasia of pets to residents of the City of Brampton and able to conduct shelter tours, presentations, and site visits and able to identify medical conditions, develop courses of action, monitor and provide treatment required for animals during their stay, and coordinate transfers to and from veterinary hospitals
  • The candidates should be able to counsel owners and adopters on their animal’s health, behavior evaluation, and medical history and able to perform behavior evaluations on animals to determine suitable adoption candidates
  • The candidates should be able to provide technical support related to animal health and welfare of domestic and wildlife species to the public and respond to public complaints
  • The candidates should be able to maintain records on all animals in shelter software and provide regular reports and able to assist with ensuring the shelter is maintained in a clean and safe manner and order medical supplies
  • The candidates should be able to ensure staff are complying with health and safety guidelines, provide H & S training, complete incident reports, and monitor PPE and able to assist with meeting budget expectations and monitor expenditures
  • The candidates should be able to attend special events and/or coordinate staffing to ensure representation and able to collect various samples, conduct diagnostic testing, and interpret testing results
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with veterinary hospitals for advanced care of animals, make decisions regarding treatment while keeping costs low, schedule appointments, and ensure animals are returned to the shelter in a timely manner
  • The candidates should be able to review current practices and treatment protocols, make recommendations for change, and be involved in the process
  • The candidates should be able to manage the bio-security of the facility during disease outbreaks and able to attend off-site emergencies and able to supervise staff and the shelter in the absence of Supervisors (occurs on weekends, and vacations)
  • The candidates should be able to oversee the Animal Control function in the absence of Supervisors and on-call weekends
