City of Oakville, Department of Parks and Open Space of manages over 200 parks, trails, and recreational spaces. It provides maintenance, development, and stewardship of green spaces, sports fields, and community amenities. It plays a key role in enhancing Oakville’s livability and community well-being. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of minimum of Grade 12 education
Experience: Candidates should have 1–2 years of turf-related experience demonstrating basic knowledge in Sports Field Maintenance and the ability to operate a tractor with appropriate attachments

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate effective oral and written communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should have proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties, work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • The candidates should be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold a Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Horticulture and/or Agriculture
  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Ministry of Environment Landscape, Forestry & Industrial Vegetation Exterminator License
  • The candidates should understand the Highway Traffic Act and have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • The candidates should hold and be able to provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s Licence Class DZ (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour
  • The candidates should note that applicants with 6 or more demerit points are ineligible for consideration
  • The candidates should be prepared, if new hires, to provide a current driver’s abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town-administered road test as a condition of employment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to organize resources, supplies, labour, and tools, and inform the Sports Field Leadhand of any requirements needed to carry out assigned tasks, operate all vehicles, equipment, and tools safely and efficiently, and provide appropriate instruction to staff
  • The candidates should be able to adjust maintenance schedules to effectively execute fertilizing programs and turf renovation activities such as aeration, over-seeding, and topdressing in alignment with current practices
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate familiarity with official dimensions of playing surfaces including baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, and football fields, as well as lining and grooming procedures for safe, playable surfaces, ensure and assist staff in the safe and effective operation of grooming equipment
  • The candidates should be able to inspect all surfaces to ensure they are safe for daily use and promptly report unsafe conditions to the Leadhand, complete daily cleaning of all designated areas, including players’ benches, backstops, and areas under bleachers
  • The candidates should be able to make informed recommendations to the Leadhand regarding necessary spray programs, apply pesticides as directed in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to maintain awareness of tournament requirements and ensure tasks are completed with minimal disruption to play, properly install and maintain home plates and pitching points
  • The candidates should be able to keep accurate records of daily tasks and report findings to the Sports Field Leadhand, perform other duties as assigned in support of overall sports field maintenance and operations
