Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Post-Secondary education in disciplines pertinent to the job function such as Veterinary Technology, Police Foundations from a recognized College or University or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have extensive experience working in an Animal Shelter and enforcement environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be immunized against rabies and have a rabies titre taken every two years to determine immunity level and, if needed, receive booster vaccinations against rabies

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience delivering animal services and managing animal facilities and operations and experience operating within a regulatory environment at a supervisory level
  • The candidates should possess excellent computer skills and the ability to use various applications, such as the Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of animal service related applications
  • The candidates should have highly developed verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with staff at all levels of the organization
  • The candidates should possess highly developed interpersonal, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills and demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters
  • The candidates should have familiarity with relevant employment legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “G” Driver’s Licence and the ability to obtain a City of Operators Permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to develop, review, amend, and implement policies and procedures as required, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards and able to participate in the development and implementation of operational plans, aiming to harmonize services city-wide and improve overall efficiency and effectiveness
  • The candidates should be able to supervise, motivate, and train assigned staff, fostering effective teamwork, high standards of work quality, continuous learning, and innovation and able to supervise the day-to-day operation of all assigned staff, including scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work, and coordinating vacation and overtime requests
  • The candidates should be able to monitor and evaluate staff performance, approve salary increments, handle grievances, and execute disciplinary action when necessary and able to provide input into and administer assigned budgets, ensuring expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved limits
  • The candidates should be able to make recommendations and assist the manager in effective planning, implementation, and delivery of animal services, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives and able to recommend, review, and deliver internal and external programs, implementing changes as necessary to enhance operational performance and service delivery
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the development, implementation, and maintenance of a quality assurance program for front-line staff, monitoring daily activities to ensure proficiency and effective service delivery
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with various stakeholders, including community residents, groups, agencies, councillors, and other governmental and non-governmental organizations, to address community needs and deliver programs and services effectively
  • The candidates should be able to investigate, establish, and monitor revenue-generating programs and partnerships, such as licenses and adopt-a-thons, to support the sustainability of animal services and able to implement technological changes to increase public awareness and track program activities, improving the efficiency of the service delivery
  • The candidates should be able to compile, collate, and evaluate statistical data for program tracking and quality assurance purposes, ensuring the provision of animal care and husbandry is consistent with best practices and established guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to create, implement, and supervise all regional animal shelter programs and partnerships, including the development and monitoring of external service delivery contracts
  • The candidates should be able to manage the maintenance and repair of the building, housekeeping requirements, and projected costs, ensuring compliance with regulations, policies, and best practices
