Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have post-secondary education in a professional discipline pertinent to the job function, or an equivalent combination of education and considerable experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the operation of an institutional food service with in-depth knowledge of quantity food preparation and service, including experience in menu planning

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to effectively manage complex or challenging client issues, involving vulnerable populations within community settings
  • The candidates should have the ability to problem-solve day-to-day food service work-related matters
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal with emergency situations in a practical and efficient manner

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience providing leadership to staff in a professional/institutional food service environment, preferably in a unionized environment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of holistic nutrition and therapeutic diets
  • The candidates should have knowledge of food service management, methods, materials, and equipment employed in large-scale food preparation and serving
  • The candidates should have knowledge of sanitary standards for food service areas and personnel
  • The candidates should have excellent and effective oral & written communication skills at a supervisory level
  • The candidates should have the ability to provide and display excellent customer service when working with clients, service providers, the general public, and/or staff in relation to incoming service inquiries, requests, and/or complaints
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of collective agreements, government legislation in the areas of food handling and sanitation, employment, occupational health and safety, and human rights
  • The candidates should have the ability to manage labor relations-related issues in a respectable and fair manner
  • The candidates should have proficiency using food services computer applications and Microsoft Office software, as well as the ability to manage important administrative tasks such as inventory, food ordering, scheduling, and payroll
  • The candidates should have valid registration with the College of Dieticians of Ontario

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to responsibly supervise and organize one or more institutional food services operations
  • The candidates should be able to supervise, motivate, and train assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality, and organizational performance, as well as encourage innovation in others. They should follow all City of Toronto staff policies
  • The candidates should be able to supervise the day-to-day operation of all assigned staff, including scheduling, assigning, and reviewing of work. They should authorize and coordinate vacation and overtime requests
  • The candidates should be able to monitor and evaluate staff performance, hear grievances, consult with labor relations, and with Manager Food & Nutritional Services, and proceed with disciplinary action when necessary
  • The candidates should be able to monitor program operations to ensure all services meet client needs and are provided in accordance with Divisional policies, procedures, and applicable legislation, and recommend changes to improve operational performance
  • The candidates should be able to participate on committees/workgroups with internal/external stakeholders to review/enhance programming and services to clients. They should assist in the preparation of effective communication strategies for internal/external audiences
  • The candidates should be able to facilitate staff meetings and training
  • The candidates should be able to plan, develop, and coordinate with appropriate management staff special catering events for homeless residents within the community, such as BBQs, holiday functions, and emergency planning meetings
  • The candidates should be able to provide input into and administer the assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations as it relates to food services program. They should monitor and control spending on all purchase orders and contracts required for operations and authorize contract release orders as needed
  • The candidates should be able to maintain records and prepare operating reports as required
  • The candidates should be able to supervise the safe, nutritious, cost-effective preparation and service delivery of food
  • The candidates should be able to plan menus following Canada’s Food Guide, prepare, and place orders for food, cleaning supplies, paper goods, etc.
  • The candidates should be able to plan menus according to special dietary requirements and provide a diverse menu reflecting the diversity of the client population. They should monitor and control food service operations inventories, incoming stock, and delivery receipts
  • The candidates should be able to consult with appropriate staff and residents to determine any special dietary or nutritional needs and ensure that collective/individual nutritional needs are met according to Canada’s Food Guide and other legislated guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the maintenance of proper sanitary conditions of kitchen and dining room areas
  • The candidates should be able to arrange service calls with contracted companies for repair and continued preventative maintenance of equipment
  • The candidates should be able to ensure food production/service areas are safe and in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety Guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to ensure that sanitary conditions are maintained in kitchen/food service areas, according to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and other legislated food safety protocols
  • The candidates should be able to comply with all requirements of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and City of Toronto policies regarding workplace accidents
  • The candidates should be able to maintain security of the workplace by locking and checking equipment is turned off/stored appropriately
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with clients, health care workers, counselors, and Shift Leaders in all programs to sustain client-centered service
  • The candidates should be able to work shifts and weekends to provide supervisory coverage
