Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High school graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 5 years of concrete construction and maintenance experience including supervisory experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment and willing to work on construction sites occasionally
- The candidates should be capable of handling complaints and negative comments and read plans and drawings for short periods
- The candidates should be able to work in an environment that includes both office-based tasks and working outside in all weather conditions
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should organize and prioritize the work of assigned work crews and basic-level operation skills on a personal computer
- The candidates should understand and apply the methods and principles of concrete construction and maintenance
- The candidates should be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets, and grade sheets
- The candidates should maintain accurate records, supervise and direct a large staff and and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should be capable of dealing effectively with the public and outside agencies and prioritize safety and coordinate a safety program
- The candidates should have completed courses in an accredited supervisory or leadership development program covering Conflict Management, Leadership, Communication, Project Management (80 hours)
- The candidates should possess a Snow and Ice Removal Certificate (12 hours) and a valid Traffic Control Person Certificate (8 hours)
- The candidates should possess a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to coordinate, assign and review the work of approximately 16 FTE staff involved in the maintenance and construction of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways
- The candidates should be able to ensure schedules, procedures, and established performance and safety standards are met; make recommendations on employee selection, promotion, discipline, and development; provide employee training; and input to employee performance appraisals
- The candidates should be able to interpret engineering drawings to determine job requirements and provide input to job priority and job cost estimates
- The candidates should be able to establish daily crew assignments by prioritizing daily and emergency work orders determine materials, staff resources, and equipment requisition materials and equipment maintain records such as work orders, repair records, equipment requisitions, and time sheets prepare daily journal and operational reports
- The candidates should be able to review job matters and schedules with outside agencies and City departments conduct site and ongoing safety inspections at various locations to review work progress and requirements
- The candidates should be able to review the work of contractors and outside agencies to ensure adherence to specifications assist crews provide input to operational requirements of the section, and assist in planning for capital projects
- The candidates should be able to respond to inquiries and complaints from the public, contractors, and outside agencies regarding service and operational issues
- The candidates should be able to investigate complaints such as damaged concrete and arrange for repairs arrange with other sections to provide site services
