Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should possess an MSW or master’s level qualification in a related field (Counsellor I), or BSW (Counsellor II)
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience in a Counselling setting, with expertise in the fields of mental health and addictions, particularly in community-based services

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in an office environment or various community settings
  • The candidates should be capable of sitting for extended periods during counseling sessions
  • The candidates should have the capability to travel for outreach or community engagement activities

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have current registration with OCSWSSW or a regulated body under the Regulated Health Professions Act, which is mandatory
  • The candidates should have certification in ASIST, CPI, and First Aid/CPR is required for the candidates (or a willingness to obtain on their own within 3 months)
  • The candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of client-centered mental health and addictions interventions, practice methods, and professional skills is deemed essential
  • The candidates should demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge of community resources and organizations, including substance use issues, and be proficient in harm-reduction based interventions
  • The candidates should have experience working with individuals struggling with mental health and/or addiction problems is deemed necessary
  • The candidates should have experience practicing from a harm reduction philosophy
  • The candidates should have experience in conducting bio-psychosocial assessments and utilizing therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is expected
  • The candidates should possess excellent organizational and time management skills
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills are required for the candidates to work with diverse client groups with varying levels of comprehension and language capability
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain a wide range of contacts with healthcare professionals and community organizations
  • The candidates should have an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire and maintaining it throughout employment is a requirement
  • The candidates should have to provide effective client services in both English and French is preferred
  • The candidates should have the capability to remain stationary for prolonged periods
  • The candidates should have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide therapeutic services to achieve improved symptom management, improved interpersonal relationships, and increased capacity to realize goals and participate actively in the community
  • The candidates should be able to provide prevention, assessment, referral, and clinical counseling and follow-up services to individuals and family members affected by mental health and substance use disorders
  • The candidates should be able to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of CMHA Algoma, relevant legislation and regulations, and organizational policies, to promote the delivery of efficient and high-quality services
  • The candidates should be able to provide client-centered individual counseling to address the specific issues and concerns directly related to the symptoms of a serious mental illness and/or concurrent disorder
  • The candidates should be able to provide client-centered individual counseling to address the specific issues and concerns directly related to the symptoms and behaviors of a substance-related disorder
  • The candidates should be able to provide brief, solution-focused psychotherapy services to adults on an individual, couple, or group basis
  • The candidates should be able to provide counseling
