Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have A degree in health-related discipline preferred (such as nursing, laboratory, epidemiology, and other allied health) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in infection prevention and control in the Long-Term Care, Acute or Complex Continuing Care sectors

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be self-directed, well-organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to determine priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to plan activities while performing a variety of different responsibilities with conflicting deadlines and to respond effectively to fluctuating workload demands
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work in outbreak environments and should have the ability to work flexible hours

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have current registration and be in good standing with a regulatory healthcare body in Ontario and possess experience and knowledge of long-term care home operations
  • The candidates should demonstrate experience in leading IPAC-related incident investigations and have experience in supervising within a unionized environment
  • The candidates should have completed an entry Level 1 Infection Control course and have strong knowledge of infectious diseases, microbiology, epidemiology, occupational health & safety practices, and statistics
  • The candidates should possess proficient computer skills, including the use of computer databases, spreadsheets, literature search, and healthcare information systems (PointClickCare) amd have Membership with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Canada
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in an interprofessional team environment, with staff at all levels of the organization and external partners
  • The candidates should possess demonstrated skill in teaching with strong written communication skills and have experience and working knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act & its Regulations
  • The candidates should have experience in participating or leading Quality Improvement initiatives and should be certified in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to implement detailed plans and recommend policies/procedures regarding program-specific requirements
  • The candidates should be able to conduct research into the assigned area, in consultation with the divisional Infection Prevention & Control (IPAC) Committee, ensuring that such research takes into account developments within the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation, and initiatives by other levels of government. They should also research best practices for infection prevention and control
  • The candidates should be able to provide input into and administer the assigned infection control budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations
  • The candidates should be able to lead, plan, implement, and track the delivery and completion of IPAC (including outbreak management), training and education to staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors, and residents, and maintain relevant records. They should also provide input for employee performance reviews/appraisals
  • The candidates should be able to lead the implementation of the IPAC program and practices in the respective Long-Term Care Home in accordance with relevant acts and legislations that meet infection prevention and control requirements as outlined by the Ministry of Long-Term Care, Ministry of Labour, and Accreditation Canada
  • The candidates should be able to audit IPAC practices in the Home, as required, including hand hygiene, selection and donning and doffing of personal protective equipment to prevent disease outbreaks
  • The candidates should be able to conduct monthly infectious disease surveillance and review results regularly to ensure staff are conducting infectious disease surveillance appropriately and suitable action is taken. They should also monitor and evaluate staff performance and recommend disciplinary action to management when necessary
  • The candidates should be able to lead and implement IPAC practices to manage outbreaks and minimize risks to residents and staff
  • The candidates should be able to lead, coordinate, and convene the respective Homes’ interdisciplinary IPAC Team on a regular basis, and more frequently during an infectious disease outbreak in the Home. They should also engage with Toronto Public Health on the outbreak response when relevant, including when an outbreak has been declared
  • The candidates should be able to consult and collaborate with the interdisciplinary IPAC Team, other healthcare professionals, and affected departments in the Home to implement, monitor, and evaluate the IPAC program
