Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Grade XII education in a secondary school plus Power Lines JourneyPerson training and intermediate related courses
Experience: Candidates should have experience as a JourneyPerson in the provincial lines trade to be familiar with the operation and maintenance of the type of equipment used in the Company

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should perform duties that result in standing and/or walking for varying periods while instructing, overseeing practical training, writing, and on occasion, carrying fairly bulky equipment, teaching aids, or training material for short distances
  • The candidates should perform duties that result in sustained concentration for frequent periods daily while instructing, developing lessons, preparing comprehensive reports, evaluating and grading results
  • The candidates should be exposed to hazards while instructing and demonstrating in workshops, on work equipment, laboratories, and community colleges at various locations around the province, which could result in approximately ten or more nights’ absence from home each month

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of the principles and theories sufficient to understand the principles of equipment operation utilized in the Company at a level to adequately carry out the training activities related to Power Line Technician trainees and other personnel
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of English and oral and written communication skills to prepare and present lessons, examinations, teaching aids, and comprehensive reports
  • The candidates should hold a valid AZ driver’s license that can qualify for the Signing Authority program
  • The candidates should have experience to be aware of the characteristics of such equipment and problems involved in servicing the electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation, electronic control, and computer systems
  • The candidates should have teaching experience to be familiar with the preparation and format of lesson materials and evaluations, the various types of teaching aids and their values, and to assess and maintain accurate records of student progress
  • The candidates should have familiarity with the organization’s structure, the responsibilities of departmental personnel, programs to be taught, the facilities available, and the duties and associated supervisory responsibilities. A period of over six years, up to and including eight years, is considered necessary to gain this experience
  • The candidates should be able to address difficulties encountered in keeping lesson material current and preparing lessons, instructions, and exercises for various classes, considering the calibre of students being taught and ensuring that material presented will produce adequately trained personnel to fill Company positions.
  • The candidates should continually reviewing course content, technical literature, discussing various aspects with other training staff, as well as Provincial Lines and contracted supervisory personnel, assessing the capabilities of students attending, and modifying and updating programs accordingly
  • The candidates should receive special assignments from the Supervisor together with an outline of requirements and discussions on objectives. Otherwise, work is of an ongoing nature and is planned, organized, and carried out with reference to the Supervisor for assistance on unusual problems encountered or for approval to implement instructional tours. Check of work is provided through the submission of reports, examination results, and feedback on services rendered
  • The candidates should assign work to students attending training courses with instructions and direction as deemed necessary, provide advice and guidance during progress, assist in resolving problem areas or clarifying instruction not readily understood, review work assignments during progress, and check work upon completion. Maintain order during training sessions and refer disciplinary cases to the Supervisor
  • The candidates should collaborate with training, Ministry of Transportation, and other supervisory personnel in the Company to solicit professional and practical views and suggestions on course material, discuss training problems of mutual interest, and agree to changes or additions to lesson content and course coverage that would be beneficial to the training program. Requires cooperating with representatives of community colleges to establish and confirm schedules for participating in instruction at their college
  • The candidates should be responsible for preparing lesson material on technical subjects such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation, and electronics or other specialties pertinent to the Company. Instruct trainees in skills, knowledge, and techniques associated with the Company’s Distribution and Transmission Lines.
  • The candidates should be responsible for making sound, accurate examinations of the Ministry Of Transportation/Company signing authority program. Errors, technical, or judgmental, in the development of lessons or training assignments, in the instruction provided, or in the testing and assessment of participants taking courses could result in operating and/or maintenance personnel being poorly trained or inadequately prepared to cope with the application of the training to their classification and pose a threat to both equipment and the safety of self or tradespersons supervised. Such errors would have some adverse effect on employee relations

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to prepare and update training lessons and other training assignments for provincial lines personnel
  • The candidates should be able to conduct various technical training courses for the Company pertaining to topics such as electrical, electronics, mechanics, instrumentation, or other specialties, including troubleshooting, systems studies, and computer systems
  • The candidates should be able to utilize theoretical and practical application for instructing trainees and other staff, including trades, technicians, technologists, and engineering employees
  • The candidates should be able to receive assignments and outlines of requirements from the Supervisor, perform necessary field and office research, and maintain awareness of the continuing development in training personnel, keeping abreast of the changing pace of modern technology
  • The candidates should be able to instruct trainees and other personnel in the classroom, workshop, or laboratories, in subjects indicated in various training locations throughout Ontario
  • The candidates should be able to supervise trainees and others on a continuing basis during their attendance at the classroom, workshop, and laboratory, providing advice, guidance, and resolving problem areas
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the preparation and setting of evaluations complete with marking and grading schemes to gauge comprehension, knowledge, and preparedness of personnel receiving instructions
  • The candidates should be able to assist others in setting up workshops, laboratories, and other training areas for skill training, including the use of tools and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to work with others in developing training aids to enhance the presentation of lessons, recommend the purchase of commercially available items for training purposes, and establish and maintain an inventory of illustrative materials or teaching aids for reuse or future application
  • The candidates should be able to visit Company locations across the province to observe equipment in operation and the methods, techniques, and procedures in practice, becoming personally familiar with new and modern equipment and methods
  • The candidates should be able to maintain comprehensive records of individual participant attendance, achievement, and progress in training, providing assessment information to supervisory staff responsible for the total progress and development of trainees and other personnel in training
  • The candidates should be able to maintain workshop laboratory learning center equipment in good working order, take inventory of equipment, tools, and consumable items, and report discrepancies to the Supervisor for action
  • The candidates should be able to qualify for and maintain Signing Authority for the Company’s Ministry of Transportation Drivers Licensing program, accomplished by holding a class AZ driver’s license in good standing for a minimum of 5 years
