Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have educational qualifications such as High school graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 3 years of related experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy material and equipment occasionally
- The candidates should be capable of working in awkward positions such as on their back, bent over, or with hands in the air, often
- The candidates should have the ability to focus for short periods of intense concentration while diagnosing problems occasionally
- The candidates should be able to read schematics occasionally and should be able to listen for and trace engine and mechanical noises occasionally
- The candidates should expect to work in a Mechanical Repair Shop environment and should be prepared to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to asbestos, which is rare
- The candidates should anticipate continuous exposure to engine oil, grease, and fumes and should be willing to work outside in all weather conditions, though this is rare
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should hold a current and valid B.C. Certificate of Trades Qualification in either Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanics (4 years)
- The candidates should possess a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program Authorized Inspector License (40 hours)
- The candidates should maintain a current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s Licence with air endorsement and keep up-to-date knowledge of the trade
- The candidates should be prepared to supply initial tools as per the agreed list
- The candidates should preferably hold NFPA Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification
- The candidates should demonstrate an understanding and application of principles to repair and design mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems
- The candidates should proficiently use hand, power, measuring tools, and diagnostic instruments of the trade
- The candidates should maintain accurate records of work performed
- The candidates should effectively communicate verbally
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to repair vehicles, equipment, and marine response apparatus and perform preventative maintenance
- The candidates should be able to identify problems using various precision diagnostic instruments and able to remove, clean, inspect, test, repair, or replace defective components using tools of the trade
- The candidates should be able to reinstall and perform necessary calibrations and adjustments and able to perform annual Commercial Vehicle Inspections
- The candidates should be able to operate and test repaired equipment and vehicles and make necessary adjustments
- The candidates should be able to operate related equipment and machinery such as welding and cutting equipment, cranes, and hoists
- The candidates should be able to prepare new vehicles to user requirements, design, customize, and install electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems and other equipment
- The candidates should be able to make recommendations on modification of new equipment and demonstrate operation of new or modified equipment to operators
- The candidates should be able to maintain records of equipment inspection, repair, and service and order parts from suppliers
