Canadian Mental Health Association based in Sault Ste. Marie, ON is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Residential Worker. The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health services to individuals and families affected by mental illness. CMHA offers a range of services including counseling, peer support, crisis intervention, and housing support. CMHA strives to create a more inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive mentally and emotionally. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have have minimum two-year diploma in a human services field related field
Experience: Candidates should possess at least 3 years of experience in mental health and addictions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be currently registered with OCSWSSW or a regulated body under the Regulated Health Professions Act, if eligible; be mandatory certified in ASIST, First Aid/CPR, and Safe Food Handling (or willing to obtain on their own within 3 months)
  • The candidates should have a minimum of one-year experience in the fields of mental health, addictions, and/or housing services, preferred; have the ability to work in partnership with clients
  • The candidates should have extensive knowledge and understanding of mental health and addiction services; possess extensive knowledge of standardized screening and assessment tools
  • The candidates should demonstrate extensive knowledge of community services supports and resources; have the ability to apply Recovery principles and empowerment-oriented philosophies and practices
  • The candidates should be able to recognize and diffuse potential conflict situations; demonstrate the ability to observe boundaries, engage in appropriate emotional regulation, and refrain from dual relationships with residents/clients
  • The candidates should demonstrate diplomacy and negotiation skills in client and system advocacy
  • The candidates should have the ability to make sound clinical judgments and effectively communicate them to others; possess excellent organizational and time management skills
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain sound relationships within and outside CMHA; demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The candidates should have the ability and flexibility to work independently on a range of tasks within specified time frames and deadlines and to work as part of a team; possess excellent computer skills and competency in software applications used by the agency
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to engage in reasonable self-care strategies that incorporate balancing work/life responsibilities and possess excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • The candidates should undergo an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire and maintain it throughout employment; they should have the ability to provide effective client services in English, with bilingualism considered an asset
  • The candidates should be capable of heavy lifting, reaching, repetition, and bending; they should have the ability to move, ascend, descend, and position themselves from the floor and back up for prolonged periods, and possess a valid driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to advocate for and support individuals in a supportive housing program through assessments, providing education, case management, supporting social recreation, and providing supportive services to the homeless
  • The candidates should be able to work independently and within a team environment in a 24-hour supported, permanent housing program, geared to meeting the needs of individuals with mental illness and addictions issues
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate self-care, healthy living, competence, self-worth, flexibility, accommodation, and the values of trust and hope as a role model
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate insight and awareness into their own strengths and limitations and have an ability to reach out to others both within and outside the supported housing environment
  • The candidates should be able to follow the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation as a Housing Support Worker
  • The candidates should be able to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of CMHA, relevant legislation and regulations, and organizational policies to promote the delivery of efficient and high-quality services
