Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have standard educational qualifications such as a Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of related experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment often
  • The candidates should be prepared to sit in awkward positions while operating equipment often
  • The candidates should expect to be confined to the cab of a vehicle frequently and experience short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment and maneuvering vehicles frequently
  • The candidates should be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions frequently and operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers, packers, pressure washers, single-axle trucks, and small hand equipment
  • The candidates should anticipate exposure to potentially abusive people frequently
  • The candidates should be aware of the need to work in close proximity to moving traffic occasionally
  • The candidates should expect exposure to unpleasant odors, dust, noise, waste products, and potentially hazardous materials frequently

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License
  • The candidates should be capable of completing forms accurately
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • The candidates should prioritize working and operating equipment safely

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate a variety of street cleaning equipment and trucks for the purpose of cleaning sidewalks and streets and collecting/disposing of refuse
  • The candidates should be able to operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers and trucks for cleaning city streets, sidewalks, and bus shelters
  • The candidates should be able to operate a crane to empty litter receptacles and able to operate refuse packers following a prescribed route to remove and dispose of refuse
  • The candidates should be able to shovel and load debris from sweepers and able to operate various hand and power equipment such as power washers, backpack blowers, brooms, and rakes to clean sidewalks
  • The candidates should be able to remove graffiti from public areas using various cleaners and chemicals and able to remove and replace damaged concrete litter tubs
  • The candidates should be able to remove snow and ice accumulations by shoveling or applying chemical ice melter as required and able to perform minor maintenance tasks such as cleaning and washing inside and outside of equipment and vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to carry out pre and post-trip inspections by checking items according to standard job procedures such as fluid levels, belts, hoses, and lights
  • The candidates should be able to report all repairs needed and damage to the supervisor and mechanic shop and able to check first aid and safety equipment
  • The candidates should be able to complete daily equipment logs and time sheets and able to respond to unscheduled or emergency calls such as gravel, cement, or oil spills
  • The candidates should be able to pick up dead animals on roads or beaches and able to assist with traffic control as required
  • The candidates should be able to notify various sections of damage to City property such as potholes, broken castings, sign or meter posts, and graffiti and able to maintain a record of all areas swept on a master street map
