City of Edmonton’s Waste Services department manages waste collection, recycling, and disposal services within the city. It oversees waste diversion programs, landfill operations, and environmental initiatives. By prioritizing sustainability and innovation, it supports Edmonton’s goal of becoming a zero-waste city while ensuring efficient and responsible waste management practices. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as completion of Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in waste management processing and disposal activities and associated equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed Leadership/Aspiring Leaders/Supervisor 101 training or equivalent, or demonstrate the ability to complete the City of Edmonton approved Supervisor training within an 18-month time frame of employment in this position
  • The candidates should possess considerable knowledge of the equipment, procedures, and associated policies and Bylaws related to the City’s Waste Management processes
  • The candidates should have knowledge and hands-on skills in the operation of loaders, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, and forklifts and have experience with using a HMI to operate a plant, Geoware, SAP plant maintenance, and Google Sheets
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience with SCADA operating systems in a plant environment that includes boilers
  • The candidates should be skilled in the operation of vehicles and associated equipment, as well as the use and demonstration of proper lifting techniques and safety procedures
  • The candidates should possess extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso, and WHMIS and strong organizational and time management skills
  • The candidates should be capable of effectively supervising the daily ongoing activities of a large workforce, including performance monitoring and attendance management and strong organization, problem-solving, conflict management, and decision-making skills
  • The candidates should possess exceptionally strong communication (written and verbal), customer service, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, along with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • The candidates should possess a Class 5 power engineering with ABSA certificate and a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or provincial equivalent, along with obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide field-level supervision to teams of operators and oversee the deployment of staff and able to collaborate with other Waste Leaders roles on program delivery and participate in planning and development of Sustainable Waste Processing strategies, initiatives, and performance measures
  • The candidates should be able to operate and oversee plant operations utilizing Human Machine Interface (HMI) and field-level operations on a daily basis, including PLC logics and able to implement corporate, branch, and section initiatives throughout the areas and consistent standards for customer service and the employee experience
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the day-to-day performance of contracted maintenance service to ensure work is conducted according to contract specifications and able to work in collaboration with Fleet & Facilities to ensure vehicles/equipment and sites are ready and available as required
  • The candidates should be able to maintain awareness of the budget and make recommendations to leadership regarding budget costs and procure required items (day-to-day purchases)
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the operational condition and efficiency of staffing, schedule, arrange for maintenance and repair activity, and respond to equipment malfunction and service problems
  • The candidates should be able to respond to incoming emergency requests such as chemical releases, ensuring that release handling is conducted in accordance with approved procedures
  • The candidates should be able to conduct regular safety and work reviews to ensure work is performed in a proper and safe manner, including incident/accident investigations and observations of near misses
  • The candidates should be able to provide support and backup for all Waste Leaders across the Section as required and ensure all City of Edmonton directives, policies, and guidelines, such as OH&S standards and policies, are followed in the execution of work
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate daily assignments to staff in accordance with plans and schedules, matching staff and equipment resources to specific needs and able to receive incoming complaints and issues from staff and provide required direction and support on a timely basis
  • The candidates should be able to provide feedback from the field regarding purchases or leased equipment and complete reports of finished work, variances from work schedules, observed field conditions, maintenance issues, equipment problems, staff performance, and discipline issues
  • The candidates should be able to provide continuous coaching and feedback to staff, including mentorship and providing advice and guidance, and support in setting work performance expectations and job standards for crews, assisting in performance reviews and seasonal evaluations
