Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should be a graduate of a 2-year college cooking program from a recognized institution or hold a Red Seal Certificate, or possess the equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have experience in food handling and cooking for large groups (aged 18 months to 99 years old) in an institutional setting
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and clients
- The candidates should possess the ability to maintain sufficient supplies, carry out safe storage practices of food and cleaning supplies, and keep accurate records
- The candidates should have the physical ability to lift moderately heavy objects
- The candidates should be capable of performing various cleaning, sterilizing, and sanitation responsibilities
- The candidates should have the ability and willingness to provide a service that enhances the dignity and respects the cultural and racial diversity of clients and staff
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have experience working in a children’s center or social service agency
- The candidates should possess fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, Canada’s Guideline for Healthy Living, Health Protection and Promotion Act, and Food Premises Regulations
- The candidates should have computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Internet, Outlook, etc.
- The candidates should have a Food Handlers Certificate
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to prepare food and beverages by cleaning, peeling, mincing, cutting, chopping, mixing, portioning, measuring ingredients, packaging, and labeling
- The candidates should be able to cook daily meals, light snacks (e.g., sandwiches, vegetable and fruit trays, cultural recipes, bagged snacks), as well as bake desserts using standard recipes and modify them according to the special needs of client groups
- The candidates should be able to, in consultation with the Programming Supervisor and relevant staff, develop daily menus and prepare all food for daily snacks, special events/functions, outings, and holidays
- The candidates should be able to ensure special dietary needs are met, such as checking allergy charts
- The candidates should be able to support cooking and dietary activities for all age groups (18 months to 99 years old)
- The candidates should be able to order food from vendors and other relevant supplies, complete grocery shopping, and maintain proper storage, inventories, and records
- The candidates should be able to monitor food supplies in the stockroom and inform the supervisor regarding food inventory and stock
- The candidates should be able to wash dishes, flatware, pots, and pans using dishwashers and/or sink
- The candidates should be able to organize and transport prepared foods and supplies necessary for service to designated program areas or locations
- The candidates should be able to refill condiment containers, cutlery, napkins, refill juice and beverage, and deliver food to tables
- The candidates should be able to return unused prepared foods and supplies to the kitchen at the end of service and/or arrange for appropriate disposal
- The candidates should be able to ensure the kitchen, equipment, and designated program areas are kept in a clean, sanitary, safe, and tidy condition
- The candidates should be able to maintain proper storage of food by receiving food and other supplies, ensuring correct quantities are delivered, and storing supplies while rotating food stock to ensure quality
- The candidates should be able to bag, remove, and transport garbage to disposal areas and maintain garbage cans and bins in a clean and sanitary manner
- The candidates should be able to ensure food is cooked, prepared, stored, and served at proper temperatures
- The candidates should be able to assist Programming staff with meals and other food-related activities, such as serving snacks and facilitating cooking programs
- The candidates should be able to provide assistance in children’s activities if called upon
- The candidates should be able to report faulty or dangerous equipment or conditions to the Supervisor
- The candidates should be able to answer phones and take messages
- The candidates should attend staff meetings
- The candidates should perform other related work
