Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of 4-year BC Trades Qualification in landscape horticulture or an equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have 1 year of experience at trades level or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy equipment and materials frequently as part of the job responsibilities
  • The candidates should be comfortable working in awkward positions occasionally, as required by the nature of the work
  • The candidates should work outside in all weather conditions, which is continuous
  • The candidates should work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to paint, primer, and glue on an occasional basis
  • The candidates should be exposed to equipment noise occasionally

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should organize and prioritize work effectively, considering deadlines, importance, and available resources
  • The candidates should understand and apply techniques including carpentry, painting, finishing, plumbing, metalworking, concrete finishing, playground construction, and landscape construction
  • The candidates should proficiently use hand and power tools, equipment, and instruments required for construction and maintenance tasks
  • The candidates should be able to read and interpret engineering plans accurately, including blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
  • The candidates should maintain accurate records of work completed, including project timelines, materials used, and any issues encountered
  • The candidates should prioritize safety and adhere to established safe work procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and identifying and mitigating potential hazards
  • The candidates should have a high school graduation certificate and should have completed a 2-year Horticultural Diploma Qualification in a related field
  • The candidates should possess a Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification, attained through a 32-hour course
  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assemble, construct, install, and maintain various park, playground, and sports field infrastructure, including park furniture, pedestrian and vehicle barriers, signage, play structures, sports and fitness equipment, pathways, chain link and wood fences, stairs, retaining walls, drainage systems, and drinking fountains
  • The candidates should be able to construct forms and pour concrete pads, as well as conduct routine inspections of park, playground, and sports field infrastructure to ensure safety and compliance with regulations
  • The candidates should be able to operate and maintain various tools and equipment such as drills, saws, grinders, compactors, jackhammers, levels, and trenchers, as well as operate vehicles, tractors, and excavators as required for the job
  • The candidates should be able to read and interpret engineering plans, design drawings, and the location of utilities to accurately execute construction and maintenance tasks according to specifications
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a variety of records, sketches, and reports for maintenance and new installations, ensuring accurate documentation of work performed
  • The candidates should be able to operate a variety of vehicles, perform equipment maintenance, report required repairs and damage to equipment, and maintain fuel and equipment supply for staff at various work sites, while determining appropriate materials and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to provide work instruction to other staff on work methods and procedures, ensuring efficient and effective completion of tasks
  • The candidates should be able to complete daily and seasonal work records and equipment slips to track progress and usage of resources
  • The candidates should be able to respond to inquiries from the public, City staff, and outside agencies regarding general parks information, providing assistance and information
