Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of directly related experience in commercial landscape, horticulture and tree maintenance
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy equipment and materials occasionally
- The candidates should be capable of short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment occasionally
- The candidates should be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions continuously
- The candidates should be prepared to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, and biohazards occasionally
- The candidates should be aware of exposure to dust, jarring, equipment noise, vibration occasionally
- The candidates should be cautious of exposure to traffic occasionally
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out job-related instructions
- The candidates should be able to operate a variety of industrial-rated equipment and vehicles
- The candidates should have experience in repairing and performing routine maintenance on equipment and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should possess the ability to deal effectively with the public and outside agencies
- The candidates should prioritize working safely on job sites and requested to substitute in a more senior position
- The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and experience in operating industrial landscape maintenance equipment and tools, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to perform mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removal of refuse and debris and prepare, plant, and maintain flower and shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees
- The candidates should be able to maintain cemetery grounds and assist with interments and maintain pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation systems, furniture, playground equipment, ponds, and streams
- The candidates should be able to water trees, hanging baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes and maintain tree wells, tree grates, and tree guards and operate stump grinders, chip brush, and under direct supervision, perform light pruning and conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment
- The candidates should be able to collect data to update inventory and data collection apps and direct traffic around equipment and operations, and in public laneways and record accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, time sheets, and tree watering or maintenance records
- The candidates should be able to provide instructions and information to other staff as required and respond to general inquiries from the public and other departments regarding park maintenance
- The candidates should be able to operate various industrial-sized trucks including tanker trucks, aerial lift trucks, trucks with trailers, hook lift trucks, and leaf vacuum trucks with related equipment and operate industrial tractors equipped with turf or horticultural attachments and operate brush chippers, loaders, and stump grinders
- The candidates should be able to operate commercial ride-on mowers to maintain grass in public spaces, including adjusting and maintaining reel and blade height and loading and unloading mowers from trailers and operate small cranes for loading and unloading materials and equipment
- The candidates should be able to operate various small power tools and equipment including chainsaws, power pole saws, push mowers, rototillers, edgers, blowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, sod cutters, grinders, sanders, and cut saws
- The candidates should be able to use various hand tools related to park maintenance and operate various light power equipment such as light rollers, light all-terrain utility vehicles, concrete mixers, and small vibrating tampers
