Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of high school
Experience: Candidates should have five years of diversified mechanical experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should expect to work in a mechanical repair environment characterized by noise, smoke, and gas fumes, often in adverse weather conditions while operating in a field setting
  • The candidates should be based in Antigonish (Zone 8) for one position and Port Hawkesbury (Zone 5) for the other position
  • The candidates should have familiarity with the Antigonish/Port Hawkesbury Fleet Services Area, covering Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9
  • The candidates should anticipate a 52-week year-round position that requires full-time and continuous duties
  • The candidates should be self-motivated, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and contribute effectively as part of a team

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a Provincial Certificate of Qualification in the Truck and Transport Trade
  • The candidates should be willing to complete Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) training upon hire as part of probationary requirements
  • The candidates should hold a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with Air Brakes and have an acceptable driving record
  • The candidates should ideally have a Provincial Certificate of Qualification in Heavy Duty Equipment and Air Conditioning Certification and completion of training in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, First Aid, and WHMIS are additional advantageous qualifications
  • The candidates should demonstrate initiative by staying updated with changes in equipment, methods, and technology within the mechanical field
  • The candidates should have knowledge of computer-controlled diagnostic technology and proficiency in computer use excellent communication skills are essential for collaborating with staff to diagnose and resolve equipment issues effectively
  • The candidates should have professionalism and a courteous demeanor are expected, maintaining high standards in client interaction

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to diagnose equipment failures in government mobile machinery and equipment used for road maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to repair, rebuild, and adjust a variety of government mobile machinery and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to use specialized tools and equipment located at a government facility designed for mechanical work
  • The candidates should be able to perform modifications and preventative maintenance tasks on equipment and assist with field repairs
  • The candidates should be able to complete all duties related to equipment repairs in compliance with safety and operational standards
