Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to handle pressure situations, multiple deadlines, and competing demands effectively
- The candidates should be able to maintain long periods of concentration during hearings and while writing briefs
- The candidates should be able to manage stressful situations by extracting relevant information without personal engagement or negative reactions
- The candidates should be flexible to work overtime on occasion and sit at a computer for long periods of time
- The candidates should be able to handle adversarial people in ways that de-escalate situations and build insights with other
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to review voluminous written material, write effectively, think conceptually, and strategize
- The candidates should possess strong mental focus and a very good memory for long periods of time
- The candidates should be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (or eligible for practicing membership) and in good standing
- The candidates should have experience advising government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, commissions, and other public sector entities
- The candidates should have experience with civil litigation and experience with commercial transactions
- Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to advise Ministers, Deputy or Associate Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government leaders on matters involving law, negotiation, strategy, and public policy
- The candidates should be able to draft and interpret statutes and regulations, draft and interpret contracts and assist with submissions to Cabinet
- The candidates should be able to present information about government and law to the public, either generally or as part of a consultation process for public policy development
- The candidates should be able to serve on project teams with senior and intermediate staff of client departments
