Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Experience: Candidates should have two years Respiratory Therapy experience in an acute care facility servicing neonatal, pediatric and adult populations

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be prepared for light to heavy lifting on a daily basis, including transferring patients, pulling, and reaching for equipment or furniture in confined spaces and be aware that during their shift (100% of the time), they will be exposed to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and hazardous materials (such as sharps and toxic cleaning or sterilizing solutions) which may pose health risks
  • The candidates should be capable of using the combined senses of touch, sight, smell, and hearing to conduct on-going assessments and continuous patient observations within Stanton
  • The candidates should be prepared to encounter emotionally challenging situations and are expected to remain calm, controlled, and professional, while demonstrating compassionate care to patients, families, and healthcare team members
  • The candidates should be able to work effectively in a health care setting where there may be significant lack of control over the work pace, frequent interruptions, and potential for mental fatigue or stress
  • The candidates should be comfortable with the uncertainty of what to expect while on duty, including responsibility for patient lives, risk of assault, and unpredictable situations
  • The candidates should be available to work 37.5 hours per week and participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation with the other two Respiratory Therapists (including the Clinical Lead), with on-call duties potentially requiring availability 3-7 times per week, which can significantly impact personal time

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of current respiratory therapy practices in both adult and pediatric or nursery critical care areas, with the ability to diagnose and care for patients with respiratory diseases, insufficiencies, failures, or related issues
  • The candidates should have the ability to initiate various modalities of mechanical ventilation
  • The candidates should possess the ability to accurately perform both invasive and non-invasive procedures and diagnostic tests related to respiratory therapy
  • The candidates should have the ability to perform duties and set priorities independently, exercising proper judgment
  • The candidates should be able to operate a desktop computer to produce written documents (word processing), send and receive emails, and conduct internet research
  • The candidates should have knowledge of education principles for adult learners to develop and deliver subject-specific training and development, and should be able to communicate effectively with both medical and non-medical individuals
  • The candidates should have the ability to manipulate small samples and repair delicate instruments in confined spaces, demonstrating well-developed motor skills

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to initiate mechanical ventilation, assess and monitor respiratory parameters and patient tolerance, suggest changes, and oversee weaning parameters to complement medical and nursing care
  • The candidates should be able to perform invasive procedures within the scope of respiratory therapy, including bronchoscopy assistance, arterial, venous or capillary and umbilical cord blood gas sampling and analysis, endotracheal intubations, and arterial line insertions
  • The candidates should be able to conduct diagnostic test procedures related to respiratory therapy, such as pulmonary function tests, peak flow measurements, pulse oximetry, sleep apnea testing, and CPAP trials, and may perform other tests as required by the institution
  • The candidates should be able to review test results for accuracy and communicate findings to the appropriate health care team member
  • The candidates should be able to complete respiratory physical assessments of referred clients and implement, administer, and discontinue respiratory therapeutic interventions, including managing humidity and aerosol therapy, oxygen, and specialty gas therapy
  • The candidates should be able to administer aerosol pharmaceutical agents in accordance with physician orders, monitor for side effects, assess treatment efficacy, and document accordingly and advocate for the dignity and self-respect of patients
  • The candidates should be able to promote patient autonomy and assist them in expressing their health needs and values to access appropriate information and services
  • The candidates should be able to protect patient trust by sharing information outside the healthcare team only with the patient’s permission or as legally
  • The candidates should be able to apply and promote equity and fairness to ensure patients receive unbiased treatment and health services proportionate and act in accordance with their professional responsibilities and standards of practice
