Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of related experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment on a regular basis, sit in awkward positions while operating equipment frequently, work confined to the cab of a vehicle for extended periods, maintain intense concentration for short periods while operating equipment and manoeuvring vehicles
- The candidates should be able to work under normal physical and mental conditions, work outside in all weather conditions frequently, handle exposure to potentially abusive people on a frequent basis
- The candidates should be able to work in close proximity to moving traffic occasionally, tolerate exposure to unpleasant odours, dust, noise, waste products, and potentially hazardous materials frequently
- The candidates should be able to operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers, packers, pressure washers, single axle trucks, and small hand equipment complete forms accurately, establish and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner, work and operate equipment safely and be age – 16 or older
Other Requirements:
The candidates should have demonstrate provide a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence, provide an equivalent combination of education and experience
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to operate street cleaning equipment such as sidewalk sweepers and trucks to clean city streets, sidewalks, and bus shelters, and use a crane to empty litter receptacles
- The candidates should be able to operate refuse packers on prescribed routes to remove and dispose of refuse, and shovel and load debris from sweepers
- The candidates should be able to operate various hand and power equipment such as power washers, back pack blowers, brooms, and rakes to clean sidewalks and public spaces
- The candidates should be able to remove graffiti using appropriate cleaners and chemicals and remove and replace damaged concrete litter tubs
- The candidates should be able to remove snow and ice accumulations by shovelling or applying chemical ice melter
- The candidates should be able to perform minor maintenance tasks, including cleaning and washing the inside and outside of equipment and vehicles
- The candidates should be able to carry out pre- and post-trip inspections, checking fluid levels, belts, hoses, lights, and other components according to standard procedures
- The candidates should be able to report needed repairs and damage to the supervisor and mechanic shop, check first aid and safety equipment, and complete daily equipment logs and timesheets
- The candidates should be able to respond to unscheduled or emergency calls such as gravel, cement, or oil spills, pick up dead animals from roads or beaches, and assist with traffic control
- The candidates should be able to notify relevant city sections of damage to property such as potholes, broken castings, sign or meter posts, and graffiti, and maintain a master street map to record all areas swep
