Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should hold a high school diploma
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidate should have the ability to perform physically demanding work, such as walking up to 10 kilometers per day over uneven ground, climbing on and off rail cars, and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds occasionally)
- The candidate should be willing to work a flexible schedule in a continuous operating environment, work shifts up to 12 hours long, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- The candidate should be able to report to work within two hours of the scheduled rest period, work outdoors for extended periods in all weather conditions
- The candidate should have excellent concentration skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask and be at least 18 years old
Other Requirements:
- The candidate should have strong communication skills to give clear and concise instructions or directions, including by radio
- The candidate should be able to pass the practical and written exams required for the position and be able to read and understand safety instructions, operating rules, regulations, and other written or printed documents in French
- The candidate should a diploma from a high school equivalency program, a valid driver’s license and speak French fluently
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to work either in train service or in marshalling service, depending on seniority level, follow precise instructions on train routes and specific movements
- The candidate should be able to coordinate the maneuvering of wagons, including coupling, uncoupling, and lifting the coupling device
- The candidate should be able to note, interpret, and transmit signals and any other information affecting the movement of trains
- The candidate should be able to instruct crew members on locomotive or train movements, including when to move forward, stop, reverse, and apply or release the air brake by giving special signals or communicating by radio
- The candidate should be able to have a thorough understanding of and comply with the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Orders, and Bulletins
- The candidate should be able to provide flag protection and transmit signals to trains in case of emergency
- The candidate should be able to board and disembark from moving or stationary equipment safely
- The candidate should be able to complete forms such as marching orders and maneuver lists, and prepare clear and legible reports, manage emergency situations, use fire extinguishers, and apply first aid techniques
