Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to use or learn to use various technical devices relevant to the position
- The candidates should have the ability to deal courteously and professionally with the public, communicate effectively in relation to their job duties
- The candidates should be physically capable of performing the required duties (accommodations will be provided during the hiring process and under the City’s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement) and be able to work in all weather conditions
- The candidates should be available and willing to perform shift work in accordance with the Collective Agreement
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
- The candidates should be familiar with, or be capable of becoming familiar with, the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations relevant to safe job performance
- The candidates should possess and be able to maintain any valid Province of Ontario certifications required to operate mechanized equipment, as appropriate
- The candidates should have a good driving record and be familiar with the location of major city streets
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to operate a wide range of collection vehicles and equipment independently or as part of a crew
- The candidate should be able to safely move carts and bags to the vehicle and operate mechanical or manual lifting systems to load materials, handle mechanical equipment attached to vehicles in a safe and efficient manner
- The candidate should be able to lift and load various waste materials, including garbage, recyclables, organics, yard waste, and special pickups such as furniture, appliances, and electronics
- The candidate should be able to return emptied containers and carts neatly to their original set-out locations, assist drivers by providing clear signals during vehicle maneuvering or reversing when part of a two-person crew
- The candidate should be able to transport loads to designated disposal facilities and unload materials in compliance with facility protocols
- The candidate should be able to complete Daily Pre-Trip Inspections (Circle Checks), report vehicle issues, and maintain cleanliness of assigned vehicles and equipment
- The candidate should be able to complete required documentation, such as Driver’s Collision/Incident Reports, in a timely and accurate manner
- The candidate should be able to communicate effectively via two-way radio or mobile phone during operations
- The candidate should be able to perform other duties at or below the wage grade level, including labouring, maintenance, and cleaning tasks when not operating vehicles
- The candidate should be able to carry out all tasks in a safe, courteous, and efficient manner in accordance with company policies and occupational health and safety standards
