Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed high school
Experience: Candidates should have experience in the operation of heavy equipment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to work overtime on short notice, successfully complete a practical heavy equipment test prior to the interview and provide their driver’s abstract at that time
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to make independent decisions, strong time and task management skills
  • The candidates should possess heavy equipment operating skills, exhibit professionalism in their work

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have hold an equivalent qualification, possess the appropriate operator’s licenses issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, specifically a Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements
  • The candidates should be able to report to the Deer Lake Depot within half an hour of notification for after-duty calls
  • The candidates should have knowledge of maintenance practices related to heavy equipment operation
  • The candidates should have knowledge of safety regulations applicable to heavy equipment operation
  • The candidates should have a valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements
  • The candidates should have a clean driver’s abstract, free of demerit points and suspensions

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to safely operate a variety of heavy equipment used in highway and depot maintenance, including tandem trucks, front-end loaders, and backhoes
  • The candidate should be able to perform pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment and maintain accurate work records on equipment operation
  • The candidate should be able to carry out winter duties such as plowing, sanding, and salting roads to ensure safe travel conditions
  • The candidate should be able to perform summer maintenance tasks including asphalt repairs, pothole patching, ditching, guide rail repair and replacement, road widening, shoulder repair, and pipe and culvert maintenance
  • The candidate should be able to conduct preventative maintenance and perform non-complex servicing on equipment
  • The candidate should be willing to participate in required training to maintain and improve skills
  • The candidate should be able to interact professionally with the general public and perform other related duties
