Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have degrees in Planning or Social Sciences, preferably with a post-graduate degree
Experience: Candidates should have 2+ years of professional experience in the heritage conservation and/or cultural heritage management field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, as the nature of this work demands cooperation
  • The candidates should be able to navigate potentially controversial aspects of the project
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership skills and may need to supervise junior professional staff

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be individuals who have demonstrated knowledge and ability in the areas of heritage conservation, architecture, urban design, community planning, and cultural heritage
  • The candidates should possess superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • The candidates should have experience in leading small teams with a proven ability to self-manage project-related activities
  • The candidates should have the ability to work within a team environment and meet defined timelines
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability and experience in negotiating and conflict resolution
  • The candidates should have experience working with communities that have been systemically excluded, including Indigenous, racialized, disabled, deaf, low income, and LGBTQ2+ communities
  • The candidates should also understand the principles of heritage evaluation, Statement of Significance, and conservation plan development
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada
  • The candidates should be familiar with UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape planning methodology as part of their skill set
  • The candidates should be university graduates from a recognized university, specializing in Architecture, with specialized training in heritage conservation
  • The candidates should be professionals with proven experience in the areas of heritage conservation and heritage policy development. Familiarity with the City’s heritage policies and processes is considered an asset
  • The candidates should be versatile individuals with sound judgment and the ability to provide accurate advice in the implementation of heritage conservation principles to a range of policies and projects. They should be capable of taking independent action within the parameters of work assignments, planning policies, by-laws, and design guidelines
  • The candidates should have membership or eligibility for membership in the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and/or the Planning Institute of British Columbia, and/or the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP), which is desirable

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to project manage the Vancouver Heritage Register upgrade, evaluation criteria, grading system, digitalization, and addressing register gaps, as well as coordinate all other related planning and public consultation activities until its completion
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate interdepartmental input from various departments, especially from the Vancouver Plan project team, Arts Culture & Community Services, Social Planning, DTES team, and City’s Indigenous Planning team
  • The candidates should be able to engage with heritage/cultural asset mapping and associated heritage policy development as part of the broader city-wide community planning
  • The candidates should be able to, in collaboration with the integrated Vancouver Plan project team, work closely with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to honor the presence and cultural heritage values of Indigenous historic places
  • The candidates should be able to support background research regarding historical trends of exclusion and displacement of communities within the city and region to inform heritage policy development and implementation
  • The candidates should be able to prepare reports and make presentations in public, to advisory panels and commissions, and to Council
