Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship program of 7220 hours
Experience: Candidates should have 1 year of practical, mechanical or machine shop experience in an automotive garage environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be physically fit, with stamina to perform the duties of a licensed Truck & Coach Technician (which may include working in a standing position for long periods)
  • The candidates should be able to work in uncomfortable or confined positions on occasion
  • The candidates should be able to work a variety of scheduled shifts, including weekends and nights, as per the Collective Agreement
  • The candidates should possess good manual dexterity and the ability to work to close tolerances
  • The candidates should be able to tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil/grease, fumes, solvents, paints, lacquers, hot/sharp metals, and surface finishing products

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be completed specialized motor vehicle courses, which are desirable
  • The candidates should be previous experience in motor vehicle repair, which is an asset
  • The candidates should be previous experience in automotive garage work, which is an asset
  • The candidates should be registered as an Apprentice with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development
  • The candidates should be in possession of a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as Automotive Service Technician 310S
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about city policies and procedures affecting shop operations
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about the standard methods, tools, and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade
  • The candidates should be familiar with diagnostic equipment
  • The candidates should be proficient in personal computers, with the ability to learn and use the Fleet Management Information System
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about safe work practices of the trade
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • The candidates should have successfully completed a pre-employment ergonomic assessment, if not previously tested
  • The candidates should possess a keen interest in and aptitude for the trade
  • The candidates should possess a work record of good attendance and job performance
  • The candidates should possess sound judgment
  • The candidates should have good working relationships with fellow employees

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to conduct diagnostic inspections of buses to identify mechanical issues accurately
  • The candidates should be able to perform general mechanical overhaul and repair work on buses, following established procedures
  • The candidates should be able to carry out daily maintenance repairs on buses to ensure their proper functioning
  • The candidates should be able to perform unit changes or repairs on various components such as transmissions, brakes, suspensions, and electrical systems
  • The candidates should be able to undertake major repairs on engines and transmissions, adhering to safety protocols and guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to make miscellaneous adjustments to doors, destination signs, and other vehicle systems as required
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate proficiency in following the prescribed apprenticeship program and comply with relevant policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to work independently, with minimal direction, and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a maintenance repair team
  • The candidates should be able to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, drawings, and work orders
  • The candidates should be able to apply knowledge and skills in the repair of Transit Fleet vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to learn new skills in a timely manner
  • The candidates should be able to operate within a computerized Fleet Management Information System
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • The candidates should be able to learn to use, operate, and maintain tools and state-of-the-art automotive diagnostic and test equipment
