Casuals – Police Services
The City of Nanaimo is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Casuals – Police Services. The City of Nanaimo is a livable urban center located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, situated between the mountains and the ocean. It still maintains its historic charm and is growing. Nanaimo is a short ferry trip away from Metro Vancouver and a 90-minute drive from Victoria. Vancouver Island University is located in Nanaimo, and it is rich in parks, recreational, cultural, and social amenities that make it an ideal place to live. The City of Nanaimo is seeking casual employees to work in a variety of positions at Police Services, including Switchboard Operator, Watch Clerk, Police Records
Clerk and Prisoner Guard. Under the general supervision of the Manager, Police Support Services, these positions provide support to the RCMP detachment. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Salary: Clerical positions: $32.89 hourly – Prisoner Guard position: at $31.76 hourly

Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have certain qualifications listed below, categorized for each position
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field, specifics are listed below with each position
Other Requirements:
Clerical positions:
- The candidates should have successfully completed a minimum 6-month Office Administration training program from an accredited educational institution, such as VIU or Sprott Shaw
- The candidates should also possess a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience
- The candidates should have experience in switchboard operation and data entry would be advantageous, and prior experience in a law enforcement environment
- The candidates should have an equivalent combination of education and experience will be taken into consideration
Prisoner Guards:
- The candidates should have at least a Grade 12 education, complemented by guard training or relevant courses
- The candidates should have a minimum of 3 months’ related work experience for this role
- The candidates should have possession of Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification
- The candidates should have an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Candidates must attain and maintain RCMP Reliability/Security clearance, which is mandatory for above both positions
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to monitor and supervise inmates within the correctional facility
- The candidates should be able to conduct regular security checks and inspections of the facility and inmates’ living areas
- The candidates should be able to enforce rules and regulations, maintaining order and discipline among inmates
- The candidates should be able to conduct searches for contraband and dangerous items
- The candidates should be able to escort inmates to various locations within and outside the facility as needed
