The Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Department of Engineering – Design – Geotechnical And Geoenvironment is an essential component of the city’s public transit infrastructure development. The department provides valuable insights and recommendations for the design and construction of transit facilities and infrastructure. The TTC contributes to the continued expansion and enhancement of Toronto’s public transit network, supporting the city’s mobility needs for generations to come. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a university degree in Geological or Civil Engineering, or the equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have experience with geotechnical & geo environmental engineering systems as it pertains to multimodal transit systems and related facilities

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have expert knowledge of current/relevant geotechnical & geo environmental engineering principles, methods, practices, engineering systems, and concepts, including designated substance surveys, construction noise and vibration, waste disposal, and indoor air sampling for the design and construction of transit facility major underground (subway box, tunnel, station) and above-ground (station, car house, bus garage, maintenance shop, electrical substation, bridge) structures
  • The candidates should possess comprehensive knowledge of the Engineering Department’s other disciplines
  • The candidates should have extensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including but not limited to the Ontario Building Code (OBC), the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) legislation, and TTC Design Standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate in-depth knowledge of project management planning and delivery concepts, practices, and methods
  • The candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of business administration, fiscal and human resources policies, and legislation/regulations regarding TTC system-wide safety, security, and employment
  • The candidates should possess sound knowledge of software applications typically used for geotechnical & geo environmental design analysis and calculations
  • The candidates must be registered as a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
  • The candidates must be eligible to register as a Qualified Person under the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and Excess Soil Management
  • The candidates must have or rapidly acquire knowledge of the Engineering Department and TTC-wide organizational structure, operations, functions, policies, and procedures applicable to the work performed
  • The candidates must obtain and maintain Subway/SRT Rule Book training certification

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to plan, direct, delegate, supervise, manage resources, conceptualize, coordinate, and oversee all activities of the Geotechnical & Geo environmental Design Section as the Chief Engineer, Geotechnical
  • The candidates should be able to organize, prioritize, and oversee work to ensure the safety and security, technical accuracy, adequacy, and timely completion of all geotechnical & geo environmental designs for new construction, expansion, and renovation of various multimodal transit-related facilities, structures, and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to act as a subject matter expert representing the TTC on engineering-related matters, analyzing and reviewing TTC projects designed by consultants, as well as examining and evaluating proposed real estate development applications for coordination and impact to existing TTC properties, infrastructure, and/or protected provisions
  • The candidates should be able to establish, develop, categorize, maintain, initiate updates, and approve releases of TTC Design Standards (Design Manuals, Master Specifications, Standard & Directive Drawings) and TTC Developers Guide for internal and external design development purposes, as well as PSOS (Project Specific Output Specification) for design-build projects
  • The candidates should be able to promote a respectful work and service environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and is free from harassment and discrimination
  • The candidates should be able to provide leadership in the development and implementation of inclusive and accessible policies, programs, and/or services for employees and customers in accordance with TTC’s commitments and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Related Orders, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and TTC’s policies
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program
  • The candidates should be able to work outside of normal working hours to meet objectives and deadlines or to respond to emergency calls
