Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an educational institute accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association
Experience: Candidates should have experience practicing veterinary medicine with livestock such as cattle and pigs and companion animals (dogs and cats)

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when emergencies dictate, and must be able to travel provincially, nationally, and internationally
  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including moving animals and carcasses and working psychologically demanding field work under adverse conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Manitoba, or eligible for full licensure with the ability to attain prior to hire and possess a valid class 5 driver’s license and have access to a vehicle for travel
  • The candidates should provide satisfactory criminal record check and be legally entitled to use firearms, as well as handle and administer narcotic drugs. They should have successfully completed the North American Licensing Exam (NAVLE) and other prerequisite exams required to obtain a full license to practice in Manitoba
  • The candidates should have advanced training and/or experience in veterinary medicine with animal welfare, animal behavior/ethology, infectious disease, disease control, epidemiology, regulatory veterinary medicine, and/or veterinary public health
  • The candidates should have experience diagnosing and treating disease conditions of livestock and companion animals and have excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, including internal and external stakeholders
  • The candidates should possess excellent written communication skills and Knowledge of companion animal husbandry and animal welfare, including individuals and groups of animals, companion animal breeding practices, animal shelter/rescue practices, pound and boarding kennel practices, and euthanasia of animals
  • The candidates should have strong organizational skills and effective interpersonal skills and have the ability to develop and deliver training presentations/programs to a variety of audiences
  • The candidates should be able to work independently and demonstrate initiative by anticipating potential issues and taking action to resolve them and have proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and the ability to use databases such as Access

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to ensure the highest standards of care for companion animals, including dogs, cats, and other companion species
  • The candidates should be able to enforce The Animal Care Act and other relevant regulations to ensure that all animals in Manitoba receive the care and respect they deserve
  • The candidates should be able to supervise, engage, train, and assess the performance of all Provincial Animal Protection Officers (APOs) in multiple locations province-wide
  • The candidates should be able to lead effective and efficient enforcement delivery of The Animal Care Act
  • The candidates should be able to support the ongoing development of community outreach initiatives focused on improving animal welfare in underserved and remote communities across Manitoba
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with partners to design and implement proactive, capacity-building programs aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities
  • The candidates should be able to enforce animal welfare standards with a primary focus on companion animals and livestock when needed
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with stakeholders to promote education and awareness about responsible pet ownership
  • The candidates should be able to serve as the go-to expert for all matters related to companion animal welfare in the province
  • The candidates should be able to provide essential support to the Large Animal Welfare Veterinarian, including working with livestock as part of regular duties
  • The candidates should be able to enforce The Animal Care Act and other acts and regulations related to animal welfare standards in Manitoba, with an emphasis on companion animals
