Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment based in Clyde River, NU is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Conservation officer II. Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment oversees environmental protection and conservation efforts in the territory. It manages natural resources, regulates land use, and monitors environmental impacts to ensure sustainability. It implements policies and programs to address environmental challenges and promote responsible resource management. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and Inuktitut Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a two-year resource technical program from an accredited school
Experience: Candidates should have two years’ experience in wilderness travel and survival skills

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of computer software, including communications (email), word processing, financial spreadsheets, and databases, to be successful in this position
  • The candidates should possess community development skills in facilitating renewable resource development, park operation, and maintenance and three years of on the job training
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to access resources and problem solve regarding sustainable resources, funding resource development, and identifying tourism safety training needs
  • The candidates should have two years of experience in wilderness travel and survival skills and hold a valid driver’s license to operate trucks, snowmobiles, ATV, and boats
  • The candidates should have the ability to speak Inuktitut and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and knowledge of the Inuit language, communities, culture, land, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit
  • The candidates should possess experience or education in enforcement, licensing, and inspection techniques and demonstrate experience in wilderness travel and survival skills
  • The candidates should hold First Aid and CPR certification, as well as WHMIS 2015 certification and hold a valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to initiate, administer, and deliver approved programs, projects, and services pertaining to wildlife management, environmental protection, and the development of a mixed/traditional economy in the assigned area of Nunavut, reporting to the Conservation Officer III in Igloolik
  • The candidates should be able to ensure compliance with all relevant Acts and Regulations, as well as the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, in efforts to establish a sustainable renewable resource economy and traditional harvest that satisfies the needs of users
  • The candidates should be able to work closely with the HTO (Hunters and Trappers Organization) and local harvesters to support sound wildlife management and conservation practices while promoting a mixed/traditional economy user lifestyle
  • The candidates should be able to issue licenses and permits to the general public, coordinate inspections and investigations with other agencies and jurisdictions as required, assist with project and survey preparations, and respond to inquiries from the public
  • The candidates should be able to submit a monthly report to the HTO, administer the Fur Pricing Program, enforce the Territorial Parks Act, and monitor the efficiency of tourism outfitters within the district, particularly related to safety

Benefits:

  • The candidates will get Northern Allowance $28,169 per annum
