Government of Nunavut’s Department of Justice based in Iqaluit, NU is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Deputy public trustee. Government of Nunavut’s Department of Justice manages legal affairs and judicial services in the territory. It oversees courts, legal aid, and law enforcement. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration or related field
Experience: Candidates should have three (3) years of experience in Office Management, Legal Secretarial, Paralegal, Estate Administration, or related field

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have at least one (1) year of progressive managerial experience
  • The candidates should possess experience in accounting and Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages
  • The candidates should possess Excellent oral and written skills are required for this position
  • The candidates should have knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and Inuktut, as well as experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Director, Public Guardian and Trustee and be responsible for the accounting of funds received and disbursed by the Office of Public Trustee, as well as the general administration of estates and trusts
  • The candidates should be able to provide all required administrative services and support to the Public Guardian and Trustee
  • The candidates should be able to provide critical financial and technical support for the Public Trustee and estates across Nunavut communities, having a direct and palpable impact on the lives of many vulnerable or bereaved persons
  • The candidates should be able to manage the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Public Trustee, including staff supervision, planning, and procurement of office supplies with minimum supervision
  • The candidates should be able to lead investigations of the estate of any deceased person, advise and coordinate assets with family members, and intervene in the event there is a dispute among family members
  • The candidates should be able to work on monthly bank reconciliation, authorizing disbursements from trust accounts, and supervising the preparation and filing of tax returns of deceased and minors’ trust accounts
  • The candidates should be able to assign work, assess performance reviews, develop, and implement training plans to promote staff development, and impose progressive discipline
  • The candidates should be able to deal with various stakeholders ranging from the public, government agencies, and a wide variety of financial institutions on routine inquiries
