TTC’s Signals, Electrical, and Communication Department maintains critical infrastructure for Toronto’s transit system. It provides signaling systems, electrical services, and communication technologies that ensure safe, efficient transit operations. It plays a key role in enhancing reliability and performance across the TTC network. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed a university degree in a related discipline Electrical Engineering
Experience: Candidates should have several years of related work experience, including recent practical experience with circuit breakers, protective relays, overcurrent protection coordination, uninterrupted power supply and battery backup, lighting, and electrical and traction power systems
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have have a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent, be registered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) as a licensed Engineer, or be in progress with the ability to obtain a P.Eng licence within a year
- The candidates should have sound knowledge of electrical and traction power design principles, equipment, and systems used by the TTC, along with knowledge of industrial power systems, including switchgear, transformers, emergency power supplies, electrical grounding, protection and metering, lighting and power systems electrical test equipment
- The candidates should have sound judgment and well-developed technical, analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal communication, and engineering report-writing skills
- The candidates should have proficiency with personal computers and computerized applications related to the work MS Office, MS Word, Excel including Microstation CADD systems and operations
- The candidates should be willing to acquire Subway Rulebook Certification to be able to work at track level and Work Protection Code training to be able to work on site in an electrical environment
- The candidates should demonstrate strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CEC, CSA, NFPA, and applicable codes/practices/standards, the TTC’s electrical and traction power systems, and the associated electrical/electronic equipment, as well as the various functions carried out by the Signals/Electrical/Communications Department
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to plan, schedule, and produce detailed designs, contract specifications, and engineering drawings for department-specific system projects, coordinate, direct, and guide relevant TTC staff, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers in section-specific design work, equipment, or systems
- The candidates should be able to resolve design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications, perform complex engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications for section and department-specific system projects
- The candidates should be able to investigate, evaluate, and test new, existing, or proposed systems, components, and construction methods; troubleshoot operating problems, malfunctions, and faults; and recommend alternate designs, procedures, equipment, materials, and related matters
- The candidates should be able to compile cost and quantity estimates for specific projects and programs, monitoring to ensure alignment with project and departmental goals, initiate relevant procurement processes, review technical proposals and quotations from consultants for compliance with branch requirements, evaluate tenders, recommend awards, and monitor progress
- The candidates should be able to perform feasibility studies, surveys, and assess the condition of existing systems and equipment, determining the extent of repairs and safety of equipment and systems; perform random audits at sites to ensure quality assurance and conformance to design
- The candidates should be able to provide technical support and engineering guidance to relevant staff on a 24-hour basis, provide design review expertise of submissions received from the EC&E Group at various stages of design, offering comments concerning compliance with Subway Operations Branch requirements
- The candidates should be able to report significant safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, quality, and other engineering issues in a timely manner
- The candidates should be able to independently access all TTC properties, construction sites, and track levels on a 24-hour basis, 7 days a week
- The candidates should be able to go into the field before the design starts, during the design and construction phases, and during the testing and commissioning phase
