Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have post-secondary education related to fire safety prevention and protection programs, building or construction management
Experience: Candidates should have Extensive experience interpreting and applying fire and building codes/standards governing building construction in Canada

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates must be able to travel throughout Manitoba
  • The candidates must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment, including a respirator
  • The candidates must be able to obtain a satisfactory driver’s abstract
  • The candidates must be able to obtain a satisfactory criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry check
  • The candidates must be able to perform the physical duties of the position, including lifting heavy objects, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights, and entering confined spaces in various temperatures

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates must have a valid Full Manitoba class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • The candidates should have completed vocational training or a recognized apprenticeship program and possess excellent interpersonal skills for establishing and maintaining positive and collaborative partnerships with diverse clients and stakeholders
  • The candidates should have excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple or competing priorities within tight timeframes
  • The candidates should have extensive knowledge of effective inspection techniques and procedures and have significant experience in a supervisory or management role in any of the building and construction trades or occupations, preferably including experience in specialized fire and life safety systems inspections
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to provide consultation, advice, and code interpretations within a regulatory framework environment
  • The candidates should be able to work independently with minimal supervision and have strong written communication skills for the preparation of a variety of correspondence and reports for diverse audiences
  • The candidates should possess strong verbal communication skills for effectively communicating complex information to individuals and groups in a clear, organized manner and have proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • The candidates should have knowledge of various fire protection/detection systems and hold a Certificate in Fire Inspector level 1 (NFPA 1031)
  • The candidates should have a Red Seal designation in any building-related trade and knowledge of Manitoba Fire and Building Codes and Supporting Regulations

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide code interpretation to various stakeholders and facilitate education and training related to codes and fire prevention safety
  • The candidates should be able to report to the Program Manager and represent the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) in the delivery and enforcement of The Building Code Regulation and The Fires Prevention and Emergency Response Act as a Building and Fire Safety Inspector
  • The candidates should be able to provide consultative services regarding the application of applicable codes and standards in Manitoba and facilitate education and training related to the codes and/or fire prevention safety
  • The candidates should be able to document findings in inspection reports, ensure quality control and safety standards are in place, issue orders to remedy deficiencies, and monitor compliance to orders
  • The candidates should be able to provide consultative services regarding overall interpretation of various regulatory requirements and fire prevention to the public, local authorities, and other agencies, and may develop and facilitate training programs and seminars related to fire and life safety in Manitoba
