Government of Yukon’s Department of Highways and Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and development of transportation infrastructure and public facilities. It oversees road construction, maintenance, and snow clearing, ensuring safe and efficient travel throughout the territory. By managing government buildings and facilities, the department provides essential services to residents and supports government operations. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have Job experience operating a wide variety of heavy equipment which must include a dump truck, loader and grader

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing to work to contribute to the team environment
  • The candidates should be willing to perform general preventative maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, greasing fittings, and servicing/maintaining vehicle issues
  • The candidates should be willing to travel and should be prepared to work in adverse weather conditions
  • The candidates should be willing to use mandatory personal protective equipment, personal tool kit, and steel toe work boots
  • The candidates should adhere to the safety program and all applicable policies and procedures

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid unrestricted (no restriction to automatic transmission) Yukon Class 1 driver’s licence with air endorsement and should be safety and service oriented
  • The candidates should be dedicated to working in an environment that promotes respect, dependability, and reliability and should be motivated to learn
  • The candidates should demonstrate effective oral communication skills and should be self-motivated and adaptable to changing conditions
  • The candidates should also possess YG competency on heavy equipment (grader, loader, dump truck, or tractor-trailer)
  • The candidates should obtain a Transportation Dangerous Goods Certificate within 6 months of hire
  • The candidates should obtain a WHMIS certificate within 1 month of hire

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate various pieces of light and heavy equipment to maintain highways, recreational roads, and airstrips to acceptable standards
  • The candidates should be able to assess work to be performed, terrain, weather conditions, and equipment needs
  • The candidates should be able to place signs to warn traffic of equipment working and make adjustments and minor repairs as required
  • The candidates should be able to steam culverts, operate snow blowers, clean the shop and yard area, and perform other related duties
