Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have A Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences, Earth Sciences, Civil or Water Resources Engineering with emphasis in hydrology, hydrotechnical engineering
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years’ related experience with Hydrometric networks and/or hydrometric gauging

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates must be willing to conduct field work that may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, occasional overnight stays, and outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should know that Fieldwork typically involves carrying moderately heavy equipment and supplies in difficult terrain, on a regular basis, while meeting WorkSafeBC standards

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have expertise in fluvial geomorphology or in a similar acceptable water or natural resource field and have experience applying the theory and practice of hydrometry and hydraulics, as well as addressing its practical application
  • The candidates should be registered, or immediately eligible* (within 6 months) for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (the Forest Professionals BC, BC Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists BC)
  • The candidates should demonstrate experience planning, organizing, and conducting field-based hydrologic and hydrometric assessments and should possess a valid BC driver’s license in good standing
  • The candidates should have experience with hydrometric networks, software programs, associated technology, and equipment associated with hydrometric data collection, processing (Aquatic Informatics, and Aquarius software), analysis, and assessment as well as standard computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite) and spatial analysis software
  • The candidates should have experience establishing collaborative working relationships with senior officials, industry professionals, community leaders, First Nations, and others

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to plan, establish, and maintain hydrometric stations and networks
  • The candidates should be able to organize and coordinate hydrologic, hydrometric, and hydraulic scientific data
  • The candidates should be able to provide expert professional and scientific advice to partners and external stakeholders on water management and related analyses
  • The candidates should be able to work with considerable independence as a Hydrometric Specialist
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate expertise in hydrometric operations and data production, including information management, data analytics, and quality assurance
  • The candidates should be able to use sound judgment and coordinate highly complex or politically sensitive issues
  • The candidates should be able to escalate matters to the Hydrometrics Supervisor only when they exceed the purview of the position
  • The candidates should be able to select sites, acquire equipment, determine computer models, collect and analyze data, interpret and formulate conclusions, and prepare comprehensive research reports
