Eastern Health’s Laboratory Medicine department conducts diagnostic testing services, including blood tests and pathology examinations. Functioning as a cornerstone of healthcare, it facilitates disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring for patients and healthcare providers within the regional market. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Graduation from a recognized program in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should occasionally lift or move supplies generally not weighing in excess of 25 lbs and occasionally carry, push/pull, and lift between 25-50 lbs
  • The candidates should constantly stand, walk, and bend or stretch into awkward positions when performing specimen collection procedures with patients
  • The candidates should know that there is a constant requirement for fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, palpating for veins, entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have training or experience in basic laboratory techniques
  • The candidates should hold current and continuing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • The candidates should maintain a satisfactory record of work performance

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a variety of duties associated with laboratory tests and analyses
  • The candidates should be able to register and collect bloods (inpatient, outpatient, ER patients, and pediatric) and other specimens from patients
  • The candidates should be able to deliver specimens to the laboratory and sort, record, centrifuge, and prepare samples for analysis
  • The candidates should be able to package specimens to transport to other testing locations and perform a variety of manual and automated tests
  • The candidates should be able to stain and cover-slip slides in various departments and perform dumping of surgical specimens
  • The candidates should be able to plate microbiology specimens and perform other lab-related duties
