City of Edmonton, department of Waste Services manages residential waste, recycling, and organic collection across the city. It operates Eco Stations, the Reuse Centre, and the Edmonton Waste Management Centre to process and divert waste. It plays a key role in advancing Edmonton’s circular economy goals. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed the tenth (10th) school grade
Experience: Candidates should have at least one (1) year of experience in a waste transferring environment, including handling waste and hazardous materials

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to learn and operate related equipment and tools, including but not limited to a telehandler, toolcat, and hand/power tools
  • The candidates should have the ability to screen waste materials, including assessing the type of waste and its level of hazard, the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and contractors, the ability to succeed independently or as part of a team and the ability to maintain basic records
  • The candidates should have the ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labour for extended periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions, including bending, lifting, standing, and shoveling

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have along with customer service experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, possess WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certifications
  • The candidates should have knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction and maintenance work tasks
  • The candidates should have knowledge of safety and environmental precautions and hazards related to the assigned work

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a preliminary review of incoming materials to determine their acceptability, including identifying hazardous waste
  • The candidates should be able to assist with unloading and organizing refuse, oversized items, paint, oil, batteries, propane tanks, aerosols, and other materials into designated collection areas
  • The candidates should be able to safely handle and process a wide range of contaminated and hazardous materials, as well as general refuse and recyclable materials, prepare household hazardous waste for proper disposal and/or transport offsite, ensuring proper containment and completion of manifests
  • The candidates should be able to prepare chemicals for transport to disposal in compliance with safety standards and regulations, sort household waste (HHW), electronic waste (e-waste), and other materials efficiently
  • The candidates should be able to recover refrigerant from refrigerators, freezers, water coolers, and air conditioners, perform all tasks related to refuse and hazardous waste safely, in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to provide traffic control and coordination to ensure the safe flow of vehicles and waste materials through the facility, operate a Telehandler, pallet jacks, and Toolcat to move, load, and stage materials
  • The candidates should be able to perform litter control and collection duties to maintain cleanliness and safety at the facility, perform other related duties as required to support waste management operations
