City of Vancouver’s Board of Parks and Recreation manages parks, recreational facilities, and programming within the city. It oversees the maintenance and development of parks, trails, and community centers, providing recreational opportunities for residents. Through community engagement and strategic planning, it enhances the quality of life and promotes healthy lifestyles in Vancouver. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have National Lifeguarding Certification of Canada – Pool and Waterfront
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience as a Lifeguard I

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of performing duties in varied weather conditions
  • The candidates should have the ability to operate manual watercraft

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a Standard First-Aid Certification with CPR Level C or equivalent
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of water and beach safety
  • The candidates should demonstrate a working knowledge of Park Board by-laws, aquatic policies, and aquatic legislation
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of their assigned area
  • The candidates should be able to recognize unsafe situations in the assigned area and apply preventive measures
  • The candidates should possess the ability to deal with the public in a concise, tactful, and courteous manner
  • The candidates should possess skills in swimming, diving, lifesaving, first aid, and resuscitation

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in the safeguarding of life and property at an outdoor swimming area (pool or beach) and able to guard the more difficult areas to patrol to ensure that proper water and beach practices are followed
  • The candidates should be able to provide on-the-job direction to Lifeguard I’s and relieve for a superior while on shift as required and able to keep lifeguard and first aid equipment in readiness
  • The candidates should be able to enforce Park by-laws and inspect and clean assigned areas and should be able to patrol and/or scan the assigned swimming area
  • The candidates should be able to assume primary responsibility for patrolling and/or scanning problem or dangerous bathing and swimming areas
  • The candidates should be able to assist a superior in providing on-the-job training and direction to lifeguarding staff and able to make rescues and render assistance to bathers in difficulty
  • The candidates should be able to administer resuscitation and first aid treatments and able to check lifeguard equipment to ensure proper condition and keep some in readiness at all times
  • The candidates should be able to promote water and beach safety practices and should be able to enforce safety practices and Park by-laws and caution violators
  • The candidates should be able to check beach and pool equipment and areas for condition and cleanliness and perform cleanup work
  • The candidates should be able to bring any unusual circumstances or discrepancies to the attention of the Lifeguard III
  • The candidates should be able to check and adjust outdoor pool chlorination and sodium hypochlorite levels and maintain filter and chlorination equipment as and when required
  • The candidates should be able to assist the Lifeguard III in the preparation of minor administrative reports and relieve the Lifeguard III during shifts
