The Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit, a part of Parks Canada under the Government of Canada, is responsible for asset management in these iconic Canadian national parks. These breathtaking landscapes are renowned for their natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and cultural significance. The Field Unit plays a critical role in preserving and maintaining the parks’ infrastructure, ensuring that visitors can enjoy these pristine areas while minimizing their impact on the environment. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have secondary school according to provincial standards or acceptable combination of education, experience and training
Experience: Candidates should have experience working in a Northern environment and in maintaining a tracking or follow-up system

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of the use and maintenance of light mechanized equipment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of trail construction and trail maintenance techniques
  • The candidates should have the ability to operate and maintain equipment associated with trail construction and maintenance
  • The candidates should have the ability to contribute and work within a team environment
  • The candidates should take responsibility, communicate effectively, make things happen, and exercise sound judgment
  • The candidates should be willing to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks
  • The candidates should be willing to wear a Parks Canada uniform and personal protective equipment
  • The candidates should be willing to provide and wear appropriate footwear
  • The candidates should be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
  • The candidates should be willing to travel and work in the Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit
  • The candidates should be willing to assist in forest fire suppression, including stand-by and extra duty, if required
  • Extensive physical effort is required, including hiking and/or working for prolonged periods of time
  • The candidates should be aware of the potential for injury when performing trail maintenance activities
  • Occasionally, the candidates should be able to demonstrate tasks to others
  • The candidates must be able to live and work for up to 10 days in a remote location, and in varied weather conditions
  • The candidates should be willing to complete a certified chainsaw course

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed a 40-hour Wilderness First Aid course or a higher level First Aid course
  • The candidates should have experience working in remote areas
  • The candidates should have experience working with chainsaws
  • The candidates should have experience providing maintenance and repairs to buildings, bridges, and trails
  • The candidates should have experience carrying out construction tasks in a team environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide general maintenance, repair, and labor services to support grounds, roads, and facilities maintenance for Parks Canada Agency
  • The candidates should be able to assist with construction and installations as part of their duties
  • The candidates should be able to address other general maintenance and repair requirements as needed by the Parks Canada Agency
