Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a post-secondary diploma in Construction Engineering or Architectural Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have minimum one (1) year related municipal experience in building plan review and inspection of Part 9 residential houses and accessory structures

  • The candidates must hold or be willing to obtain qualifications under the Building Code Act in the following categories: House and Legal General
  • The candidates should have a good working knowledge of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code, as well as other building-related legislation and related plan review processes
  • The candidates should be familiar with statutes and regulations defined as applicable law under the Building Code Act
  • The candidates should possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills to identify problems and solutions and to deal effectively with a varied customer base
  • The candidates should be energetic, motivated individuals who can work in both team situations and independently
  • The candidates should have excellent organizational and record-keeping skills
  • The candidates should be able to switch focus and respond to the demands of the permit flow, customer inquiries, or administrative demands
  • The candidates should be comfortable reviewing plans in an office environment, providing guidance to administration staff, and explaining matters evolving from the enforcement of the Building Code Act
  • The candidates must undergo a Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City
  • The candidates must provide proof of their current and valid certificate(s), licenses, and/or educational qualifications, if applicable
  • The candidates must possess a valid MTO ‘G’ class driver’s license in good standing with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City. This includes a maximum of 3 demerit points, a maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months, no driving-related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months, and no ignition interlock restrictions

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to determine if applications are acceptable as a complete building permit application
  • The candidates should be able to determine the applicable building permit fees and permit due date
  • The candidates should be able to answer building code inquiries from design professionals, builders, and the general public
  • The candidates should be able to verify all applicable approvals from other levels of government and authorities
  • The candidates should be able to provide assistance to inquiries relating to the building permit and inspection process
  • The candidates should be able to inform permit applicants, design professionals, builders, etc., of any code deficiencies and resolve them
  • The candidates should be able to research code-related matters for building staff
  • The candidates should be able to inspect construction plans for bylaw and building code compliance and confirm compliance with applicable zoning bylaws
  • The candidates should be able to schedule inspection requests and results in AMANDA
  • The candidates should be able to inspect construction for compliance with approved drawings and applicable codes
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as assigned
