Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Grade 10 or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of related experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to move heavy equipment and materials continuously and should expect to walk on the collection route frequently
  • The candidates should be prepared for short periods of intense concentration while maneuvering a large vehicle and remaining aware of the location of crew members in a constantly changing work zone, which occurs frequently
  • The candidates should be willing to work outside in all weather conditions frequently and anticipate working in close proximity to moving traffic frequently
  • The candidates should be aware of exposure to equipment noise, unpleasant odors, dust, ashes, waste products, and potentially hazardous materials, which is continuous
  • The candidates should be prepared for exposure to vibration and heat from the vehicle frequently and should expect to drive frequently
  • The candidates should be able to use basic hand tools and have the ability to operate a tandem rear axle vehicle

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should understand and carry out job-related instructions
  • The candidates should complete forms accurately
  • The candidates should establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • The candidates should be capable of dealing with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • The candidates should possess a current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate a single and/or tandem axle refuse packer vehicle following a prescribed route and able to transport crew and equipment to work sites and make frequent stops for the crew to load refuse
  • The candidates should be able to empty refuse load into a garbage trailer as required and able to remove and dispose of refuse from residents by dumping totes and bags of refuse and able to deliver annual collection calendars
  • The candidates should be able to collect and account for “extra refuse” tickets and clean up fallen refuse when loading using shovels and brooms
  • The candidates should be able to transfer refuse into the truck hopper by operating the hydraulic toter lift and operate the hopper blade mechanism
  • The candidates should be able to perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle by checking items according to standard job procedures
  • The candidates should be able to check and adjust the air brake system, report needed repairs and damage to the supervisor and mechanic shop, and check first aid and safety equipment and able to clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle as required and wash the inside of the packer body and buggies
  • The candidates should be able to relay job assignment information from the supervisor to the crew and record information such as residences which differ from the register or contravene sanitation by-laws
