Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have successful completion of an approved/recognized Personal Care Attendant Program or other equivalency
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to regularly lift/move objects/supplies up to 30 lbs and engage in frequent standing and walking
- The candidates should regularly engage in a variety of body movements including bending, kneeling, stretching, and pushing and pulling objects using light to medium force
- The candidates should have data input, visual monitoring, and higher than normal levels of attentiveness and attention to the health and safety of others in the provision of all forms of care
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have completed an adequate portion of the BN or Practical Nurse program to enable them to meet a majority of the duties, responsibilities, and psychomotor competencies of the PCA
- The candidates should possess strong oral and written communication skills, be able to maintain effective working relationships with residents, staff, and families, and demonstrate initiative
- The candidates should be capable of working independently and prioritizing work duties
- The candidates should have a satisfactory record of work performance
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to provide support to residents in all aspects of daily living through companionship, physical, spiritual, and psychosocial care
- The candidates should be able to perform duties related to all aspects of the residents’ personal needs, including nutrition, personal hygiene, and mobility
- The candidates should be able to assist with planning and providing various recreational activities for residents
- The candidates should be able to support families and residents for end-of-life issues and escort residents as needed
- The candidates should be able to work under the direction of a registered nurse / licensed practical nurse in keeping with the philosophy of resident-centered care
- The candidates should be able to work in a complex long-term care setting with diverse resident needs, including chronic illness, functional and cognitive impairments, frail or elderly adults, individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, and/or individuals with mental illness
- The candidates should be able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with frequent contact with the public, residents, and other health professionals
