Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12 and a Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate program
Experience: Candidates should have practical experience preferably with clinic experience in a geriatric or long-term care setting consisting of a minimum of one hundred and forty (140) hours

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed clinical practicum hours within the Personal Support Worker program
  • The candidates should be proficient in tasks related to resident hygiene, optimal functioning, well-being, feeding, and elimination
  • The candidates should be familiar with Health Care Aide routines and practices in a long-term care setting
  • The candidates should have knowledge of infection control guidelines
  • The candidates should be skilled in transfer and positioning techniques of residents
  • The candidates should understand rehabilitation and palliative approaches
  • The candidates should have knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • The candidates should be effective team members and be respectful and caring towards residents
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively with cognitively impaired residents, families, colleagues, and staff
  • The candidates should be able to organize and prioritize workload and manage time effectively
  • The candidates should follow resident care plans and carry out activities as directed
  • The candidates should report resident needs through observation of physical and mental condition/behavior
  • The candidates should follow safety procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment
  • The candidates should be proficient in transfer and positioning techniques of persons requiring long-term care
  • The candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • The candidates should meet the physical demands of the job
  • The candidates should be self-motivated and display a positive attitude towards older persons
  • The candidates should demonstrate respect for resident choice, privacy, and confidentiality
  • The candidates should communicate respectfully with residents, families, colleagues, and staff
  • The candidates should be reliable, punctual, flexible, adaptable, and tactful

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to support total resident care, according to a Resident Care Plan, ensuring residents’ optimal functioning and well-being in a supportive, therapeutic environment, with an emphasis on resident safety and engagement
  • The candidates should be able to plan, coordinate, develop, manage, and implement long-term care home nursing and personal care activities, programs, services, and initiatives for residents of a municipal long-term care facility
